Foxwoods moves to certify outcome of union vote

Mashantucket — Foxwoods Resort Casino confirmed Monday that the casino’s Environmental Services Department workers voted in favor of union representation Friday.

The union, the New England Joint Board of Unite Here, had announced late Friday that workers endorsed affiliation by a vote of 163 to 131. Fifty-five percent of those casting ballots sided with the union.

A total of 304 workers were eligible to vote, meaning 97 percent did so, according to the union.

“We are proud that our employees can make these important decisions under Tribal Law, and we owe it to them to ensure that such decisions are reached fairly,” Dale Merrill, Foxwoods senior vice president of human resources and administration, said in a statement. “We are carefully reviewing the reported results to ensure that there are no irregularities."

“Regardless of the ultimate resolution of this issue, we are committed to moving forward as one team built on mutual respect,” Merrill said.

The voting was authorized by the Mashantucket Pequot Employment Rights Office. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe owns Foxwoods.

“We’re hopeful that Foxwoods will respect the workers’ decision and schedule (contract) negotiations as soon as possible,” Warren Pepicelli, manager of New England Joint Board, said in a statement issued Friday night.

“We look forward to negotiating in good faith with Foxwoods to address the many concerns that workers have,” he said.
