    Local colleges: Coast Guard, Conn men's soccer come up with major wins

    New London — Mike Daunt scored with just 23 seconds remaining in overtime as Coast Guard Academy rallied for a 2-1 victory over Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday.

    On a day the Bears celebrated Senior Day, it was a pair of seniors who hooked up for the game-winner as Robbie Fugett set up Daunt for the goal.

    Wheaton (10-5, 2-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute on a goal by Alex Nickerson before Fugett headed Gabe Gallant's corner kick in the direction of Noah Engstrom, who put the ball in the back of the net to tie the game in the 57th minute.

    John Vaaler and Josh Hudson combined for three saves in goal for Coast Guard (10-4-1, 3-3).

    In other games:

    • Sophomore Rye Jaran scored both goals as Connecticut College upset third-ranked and previously unbeaten Tufts 2-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Jaran broke a scoreless tie for the Camels (11-3, 7-2) in the 59th minute, then added some insurance nine minutes later after converting a pass from Dylan Zane. Goalie Sam Maidenberg made seven saves for Conn, which dropped Tufts to 10-1-2 overall, 6-1-2 in the NESCAC.

    • Eastern Nazarene overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Mitchell College 2-1 in the New England Collegiate Conference. East Lyme's Nicholas Ghirardi, assisted by Griswold's Mason Rubino, scored for the Mariners (0-11-3, 0-2-2) and Stonington's Joey Rosa made 11 saves in goal.

    Cross country

    • Mitchell won both individual titles during the NECC Championship meet in Henniker, N.H. Evan Carney, a junior from North Franklin and NFA, won the men's 8K race in 33:57 — nearly a minute faster than his closest competitor — while sophomore Lara Jacobs captured the women's 5K race in 20:58, winning by 17 seconds.

    The Mitchell women (42 points) finished second to Lesley (25) in the team standings, while Mitchell's men were third with 50 points. Abigail Rasmussen of Montville and Three Rivers Middle College earned All-NECC honors by placing fifth overall in 23:24.

    Women's soccer

    • Mitchell and New England battled to a 1-1 overtime draw in the NECC. Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Madison Nicynski tied it for the Mariners in the 57th minute. Goalie Angelina Munoz made a season-high 16 saves for Mitchell (4-8-2, 0-1-1), which played shorthanded for over 100 minutes due to an early red card.

    • No. 5 MIT scored a goal in each half to defeat Coast Guard 2-0 in the Bears' home finale. MIT is 16-1-1, 8-1 in the NEWMAC. Hope Drake-Duval made six saves in goal for Coast Guard (4-10, 2-6).

    Volleyball

    • Connecticut College swept a nonconference doubleheader, defeating Fisher College 25-23, 25-13, 24-17, followed by a win over host Framingham State, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-11. In the win over Fisher, Natasha Shrivastava had 31 assists and nine digs for the Camels (7-10), while Avery Light had nine kills and eight digs, Nicolette Marino three aces and Julia Dailey 15 digs. Christina Leduc had 16 kills and 14 digs against Framingham while Emma Wheeler added 12 kills and 16 digs, Light had 15 kills and Shrivastava had 42 assists and eight digs.

    • Amanda Dake and Sophia Galdamez each had a match-high 15 kills as Coast Guard defeated Endicott 3-1 in a nonleague match. Game scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19. Dake added 13 digs and four aces for the Bears (16-8) while Maddie James had seven kills and five blocks, Noelle Tursky 44 assists and 10 digs, and Kaela France 17 digs.

    • Mitchell won its first NECC match with a 25-9, 25-9, 25-8 win over Lesley. Claire Binfield had a career-high seven aces for the Mariners (6-13, 1-1). Binfield, Sophie Arseneau and Bree Rudolph added four kills apiece for Mitchell.
