Getting serious about stopping illegal immigration

Here is the Elci plan to end illegal immigration. Feel free to cut this column out and tape to your refrigerator for future use.

To begin with, it's imperative that for any immigration plan to work all entry points must be secure. That requires an airtight security system. The U.S. government's overall 2018 funding for U.S. Customs and Border Protection came to around $22 billion. For the next 10 years, Congress should boost that allocation to $40 billion annually.

Yes, I realize I'm a professed fiscal conservative, but since the cost of illegal immigration to the country hovers around $120 billion annually, according to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, the increased investment will in a decade pay for itself five times over.

Increase enforcement agents by 50 percent − getting close to 30,000 border agents and 30,000 Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents – and militarize the approach. Next, build walls and barriers where appropriate with a goal of 500 more miles of fencing/walls by 2028.

In addition to both borders, all water ports, airports, train stations, and any other areas of potential access should be given the highest level of security importance.  Nobody gets in unlawfully. We unleash every gadget in our playbook to maximize the efficiency of this -- from X-rays to lasers to drones.  We keep the illegal-entry statistics as close to zero as possible.

Most liberals will argue the majority of folks who wind up here illegally actually enter legally through legitimate visas -- and then simply disappear into our communities when the visas expire. The solution to that problem is simple. If you're here on legal, temporary status, you must be fitted with some sort of tracking devise. If your visa ends and you disappear, you're now breaking federal law. If you bust your compact with the United States, you become an instant fugitive and, on apprehension, you get the one-way ticket back to your home country.

In addition to the border agents, we'll double the number of immigration judges and the number of agents who process legal immigration applications and monitor ongoing status. The wait time for vetted, hard-working people seeking legal entry will be cut in half and wait times for people seeking asylum will be drastically reduced.

With a high pitched squeal, I hear my liberal pals pounding on the breakfast tables across eastern Connecticut howling, "This deal isn't fair!"

Hold onto your reusable bags and paper straws, this is where I even the playing field. So, you want Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) kids to get legal status?  Fine, and I'll go one better. If you're hiding, waiting for an ICE agent to send you and your family back to El Salvador, I'm going to give you a one-time-only Get Out of Getting Deported Free card!

All 10- to 12-million illegal aliens will have the opportunity to step out of the shadows and into the sunlight. We'll set a mandatory reporting date of Jan. 1, 2022 to come forward to immigration officials. Applicants will be fully vetted. If they broke no laws and the individuals are not on any public assistance programs, they'll be issued a Purple Card that includes each person's new tax ID number.

Those persons will have legal status. Those persons will now be required to pay income tax. They will never be granted citizenship, however. They will never be allowed to vote and won't be allowed any social service benefits until after they've paid taxes for 15 years.

To qualify for welfare or food stamps, a Purple Card holder must hold a job for a minimum of 10 years. One other thing: there will also be a $1,000 fine.

Failure to come forward by the designated date results in instant illegal alien status and immediate deportation if found. All of those 30,000 ICE agents will be coming for you. The judges will be ready. When caught, deportation will come swift with no chance to ever return, no excuses.

This is not amnesty, but rather common sense. Realistically, it would be impossible to deport 12 million people. That would require 6,600 deportations a day for five years.

As for those business owners who continue to employ illegal aliens, the minimum fine will be $100,000 for every infraction.

In theory, the majority of current illegals would come forward for the opportunity of freedom. Families would be free to work and live without fear. The gang bangers, drug dealers or general criminals would eventually be rounded up and thrown in jail.

Business would no longer get away with cheap labor. Legal applicants would see the process streamlined. Border security would be greatly improved. Illegal immigration would be close to zero. Within 10 years the nation will have solved the illegal immigration problem.
