Black women forced to margins of society

Hi! That was me who answered your phone call last night at The Day when you called to rant (because, yes, you were ranting) about how you believed President Joe Biden was being discriminatory because he said he was going to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court.

Hi, yeah, it was me who answered your phone call. It was the phone on my desk that rang last night. The only Black woman in The Day newsroom. Hi, my name is Robin. How do you do? It was me who listened to you rant and then it was me who helped you with your concerns about how to better get in touch with the newspaper to get your letters to the editor printed. Yeah, that was me.

Yeah, it's not discrimination what President Joe Biden is doing. Yes, I held my tongue when you used that word. And in order for me not to lose my temper with you last night I then asked if you just wanted him to pick the best person for the job regardless of their color and you agreed with me. And you were fine with the next justice being a Black woman as long as she was the best person for the job. You told that me over the phone last night.

The problem President Joe Biden is trying to fix is the fact that you are unable to see me, as a Black woman. You are unable to imagine that I exist. Just like last night when you called The Day, it never crossed your mind that it would be a Black woman who was going to answer your call, but I am here. And I am going to make you see me. And the president of the United States is going to make you see us as the most qualified person to be a Supreme Court justice.

I've heard people say, "Well, it must be because you're not talented, you don't have the skills or the intelligence. You must not have the credentials. It must be because you haven't added anything of value to society." It must be my fault that you don't see me. No. It isn't. And those lies stop now.

You don't see me because of racism. President Biden's response is proportionate to the problem. Black women have been forced out to the margins of society and the president understands he must intentionally change that.

And yes, it sucks that this is how it is. I agree with you on that point. It shouldn't be like this. The president of the United States in the year 2022 should not have to publicly state that he is going to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court. It should just organically happen. But it doesn't. I agree that the most qualified person should be chosen to be on the Supreme Court. However, we live in a country that has systemic racism so intricately woven into its history and current reality that you are unable to see me. And we may be the best option.

You never asked me who I was or what department you got in touch with when you called last night. You just went into your rant. Once you calmed down a little, you were quite lovely to speak with. You had a lot of good points. And your concerns are valid.

Also, I genuinely don't want you to stop writing to us. Don't be discouraged if the paper isn't able to get your letters in print. There's a lot of different reasons why that may be happening. Please don't take any of them personally.

And that email address I gave you last night, please use it. I got it from the bottom of A2.
