    Academic and Extracurricular Achievements

    • Mercy High School Graduates: Killingworth residents Alia Barefoot, Celine Coleman, Margaret Darin, Kathleen Darling, Catherine Fulner, Robyn Hurrell, Caitlin Lehane, and Leah Offner; and Madison residents Madeline Kerins, Christine McIntosh, and Kristen Perrelli.

    Chris Muckle of Madison, while a senior at Xavier High School, was a member of Xavier's Engineering Team, which captured the Connecticut title in the Real World Design Challenge for the third consecutive year. The team went on to represent Connecticut in Washington, D.C., to defend 2011's national win in April.

    • National Merit Scholarship Finalists & Winners: Matthew Girardi (2012 National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winner) of Madison, a student at Daniel Hand High School; Christine Smith (National Merit Scholarship finalist) of Madison, a student at Sacred Heart Academy; and Jacob L. Thomas (National Merit Pfizer Inc. Scholarship winner) and Nancy L. Wu (National Merit Bristol-Myers Squibb Company Scholarship winner), both of Madison and students at Daniel Hand High School.

    Erin Paduda of Madison earned a nursing degree from St. Vincent's College.

    • Vincent Palumbo, the son of Marie Palumbo of Madison and Mark Palumbo of Clinton, is a Ph.D. candidate in materials science and engineering at the University of Connecticut. Palumbo is a recipient of the Koerner Family Fellowship for his Ph.D. research, in addition to being awarded the GAANN fellowship for his master's work in biology. He was also the 2010-2011 president of the UConn student chapter of the Materials Research Society and is the president of Alpha Sigma Mu, an honor society for materials science and engineering students. Palumbo plans to graduate in 2013.

    Francesca Panullo of Madison, a rising sophomore at the University of San Diego, studied abroad in London this summer.

    Charlotte C. Perkins, of Madison, while a junior at St. Lawrence University, spent the spring 2012 semester studying in Trinidad/Tobago.

    Alexandra Kolb Petrini of Madison, the daughter of Karen E. and Vincent P. Petrini and a member of Colgate University Class of 2014,was inducted into the Colgate chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national scholastic honorary society that recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of first-year students.

    Kevin Piala of Killingworth earned a bachelor's of science in system dynamics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

    Christopher Picquet of Madison completed the Freedom Alliance Military Leadership Academy, a two-week leadership program based on the curriculum of the U.S. military.

    Nicole Proto of Madison earned a bachelor's of science from Babson College.

    Jarrett K. Rennie of Madison received the Hamden Lodge 2224 Annual Lodge Scholarship given in honor of Edward J. Connolly.

    Johanna Regan of Killingworth, the daughter of Elizabeth and Kenneth Regan, starred in Ashland University's production of Enchanted April. Regan also received the Junior Award for the Department of Theatre at Ashland, at which she is a theatre major.

    Erik Rieger of Madison, the son of Edmund and Maira Rieger, earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Colorado College.

    Amy Rossi of Madison was among 10 Sacred Heart Academy students whose art was represented in an exhibit of student artwork at The Watermark retirement community.

    Clayton Roundtree of Killingworth began serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mesa, Arizona, this summer. A U.S. Presidential Scholar, Roundtree currently attends the University of Southern California.

    • St. Lawrence University Graduates: Jameson D. Cook of Madison earned a degree in mathematics and Sean J. Stoessel of Madison earned a degree in biology with a minor in economics.

    • St. Michael's College Book Award Winners: Daniel Hand students Elizabeth Florentine and Ian Richardson.

    Katherine Sartiano of Madison earned a Fulbright Scholarship and graduated from Connecticut College. While at Connecticut College, she received the German Consulate Book Prize, which is given for excellence in German offered by the consulate general of the Federal Republic of Germany in Boston. Sartiano is the daughter of Eileen and Frank Sartiano of Madison.

    Ashley Elizabeth Sears of North Branford, formerly of Killingworth, the daughter of Michelle M. Hurteau of Killingworth and Richard W. Sears of Guilford, earned a master's of social work with high honors from Southern Connecticut State University. She was inducted into the Beta-Rho Chapter of the Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society in the spring of 2010.

    Catherine Sinicrope of Madison earned a master's of arts in forensic psychology from Marymount University.

    Christine Smith of Madison, the daughter of Brian and Kieren Smith, was named the valedictorian of the Sacred Heart Academy Class of 2012. She was also named a 4.0 Gold Tassel Scholar in recognition of having achieved a cumulative four-year grade-point average of 4.0 or higher, was named a National Merit finalist and a Connecticut Governor's Scholar, and earned the Yale University Book Award. In addition, she was inducted into the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, and the Science National Honor Society and served as vice president of Sacred Heart's chapter of Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Society. She was named an AP scholar during her senior year. She will attend Princeton University and intends to pursue a political science major.

    Elizabeth Smith of Madison was named a Sister Antonine Signorelli Memorial Scholar at Sacred Heart Academy.

    Seth Spector of Madison graduated from Keene State College.

    Joey Staten of Madison, a student at the Pomfret School, earned a silver medal and maxima cum laude status on the Latin I exam at the school.

    Katherine Steer of Boston, the daughter of Mary Malone and Bill Steer, earned a bachelor's of arts in sociology with a minor in creative writing from Manhattanville College.

    Luke Stroehlein of Madison earned an associate's of arts in liberal arts with distinction from Bard College at Simon's Rock.

    Carter Sullivan of Haddam-Killingworth High School was one of 12 shoreline high school juniors honored as the recipients of the first annual Outstanding Junior in Mathematics Award established by the Shoreline Heads of Mathematics Departments.

    Noah Swimmer of Madison delivered the Welcome Address at Hamden Hall Country Day School's Centennial Commencement Exercises. Swimmer was president of Student Government for the Class of 2012. He will attend George Washington University.

    Cadet 1st Class Joseph Vitali of Killingworth earned a bachelor's of science in marine engineering from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

    Matthew Wivell of Madison was awarded a full Naval ROTC Marine Option scholarship to the University of Colorado.

    Matthew C. Young of Killingworth received the College of Engineering's Henry L. Sundberg, Jr., Award during baccalaureate ceremonies at Western New England University, from which he graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's of science in mechanical engineering. While at the school, he was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Beta Tau honor societies and was active in the university's chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

    Career Achievements

    Kevin Barry of Madison, associate professor of law and co-director of the Civil Justice Clinic at Quinnipiac University School of Law, was instrumental in the clinic's receiving the Clinical Legal Education Association Award for Excellence in a Public Interest Case/Project. Barry and four law students worked in support of the advocacy effort to repeal Connecticut's death penalty. Barry and the students spoke to legislators, researched legislative history and state and federal case law regarding the death penalty, and testified before Connecticut's Joint Judiciary Committee with their findings.

    Rosalyn Cama of Madison, president and principal interior designer of CAMA Incorporated, was named the 2012 Designer of Distinction by the American Society of Interior Designers.
