    Academic and Extracurricular Achievements

    Courtney Briggs of Old Saybrook won third place in the youth category of the amateur photo contest jointly sponsored by the Lyme, Old Lyme, Salem, Essex, and East Haddam land conservation trusts.

    Tyler Cusack of Clinton, a senior at Xavier High School, was part of the school's engineering team, which competed in the Real World Design Challenge at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

    • Eastern Connecticut State University Matriculants: Garnet McLaughlin of Old Saybrook, a communications major, and Brett Tucker of Old Saybrook, a physical education major.

    Juliana Jarcobosai of Old Saybrook, a student at Old Saybrook High School, was selected to represent Connecticut as a National Youth Delegate at the 2013 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University in Washington, D.C., this summer.

    Stephen Kanizaj of Old Saybrook earned a bachelor's of science in computer science from the Rochester Institute of Technology Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.

    Cameron LeClaire of Frisco, Texas, formerly of Clinton, was inducted into the National Honor Society for junior high school students.

    Liam Mellaly of Clinton, the son of Marc Mellaly and Michaele Williams and a senior in the Middletown Agriculture Science and Technology Program at Middletown High School, earned a silver medal for his Agriscience Fair project at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, For his research project, Mellaly compared the energy availability of different biofuels for his paper, "Which Fuel Has More Stored Energy: A Comparison of Four Fuel Types."

    • Mercy High School McAuley Chapter of the National Honor Society Inductees: Tatiana Bardagova of Clinton, a junior; Margaret Bartolotta of Clinton, a junior; Abigail Benchimol of Clinton, a junior; Grace Brodeur of Old Saybrook, a junior; Emily Hall of Clinton, a junior; Marla Katz of Westbrook, a junior; and Thanh Phan of Clinton, a senior.

    Miles Mortali of Old Saybrook, a senior at Xavier High School, is one of 20 members of the school's FullMetal Falcons FIRST Robotics Team No. 4557, which won the Rookie All-Star Award at the Suffield Shakedown. The team also placed first in the seeding for the playoffs. The team also competed in Worcester Polytechnic Institute's FIRST Regional Tournament, placing 25th out of 40. The FullMetal Falcons also won four awards: No. 1 for Pit Safety; the Underwriters' Laboratory "Star of the Day" award; the "Highest Rookie Seed" award, celebrating the highest-seeded rookie team at the conclusion of the qualifying rounds; and the "Rookie All Star" award, celebrating the rookie team exemplifying a young but strong partnership effort, as well as implementing the mission of FIRST. The Rookie All Star award came with an invitation to the Championships at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri, to be held in April.

    Kelsey Norton of Clinton, a senior in the nursing program at Quinnipiac University, was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing through the school's Tau Rho Chapter.

    Katelynn Paradis Dotson of Pensacola, Florida, the daughter of Catherine and William Paradis of Old Saybrook, earned a bachelor's of science in elementary education, magna cum laude, from University of West Florida.

    Alexis Quattrini of Westbrook played the role of Rizzo in Grease, a joint production of Mercy and Xavier high schools.

    Jeneczka S. Roman of Clinton earned a bachelor's of science in health science from Boston University.

    • University of New Haven Graduates: Daniel Peters of Clinton, master's of engineering and operations management; and Matthew Ritchie of Clinton, master's in management of sports industries.

    • Emily Dzialo of Old Saybrook, a freshman at St. John's University, received the 2012 Trevor Palonen Top Youth Walker Award from the March of Dimes Connecticut Chapter. She also won the award in 2011.

    Ellen Wasyl of Old Saybrook is a candidate for the Connecticut Chapter of the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's 2013 Man & Woman of the Year award.
