• Archibald C. Adams of Madison, the son of Bruce Adams and Laura Crawford of Madison, received a bachelor's of arts in economics from Colby College.

• Samira Bandaru of Madison, a junior from Hopkins School, won first place among entries from 9th- to 12th-grade students in the National Academy of Engineering's EngineerGirl essay contest. Bandaru's essay "The Mechanical Heart" explained the roles of engineers in the development of the mechanical heart.

• Sarah Bartosiak of Killingworth, a senior at Eastern Connecticut State University, presented work at the 13th annual Arts and Sciences Research and Exhibition Conference. Bartosiak's major is history and social science.

• Molly Erin Berky of Madison earned a bachelor's of science in social work from Misericordia University.

• Ryan Joseph Blewett of Killingworth, the son of Eileen and Todd Blewett, received a bachelor's of fine arts from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, with university honors. Blewett majored in film production and minored in business from the Stern School, as well as history. He also completed an internship with Saturday Night Live and studied at the FAMU film school in Prague. Blewett is currently working on an independent film project and plans to pursue a career in film and television.

• Ashleigh Brencher of Killingworth won an award in the Science Division for Environmental Science at Middlesex Community College.

• Paige C. Brennan of Madison was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta honor society at Bucknell University. Brennan is the daughter of Joseph J. and Lisa Brennan. She is a freshman in the bachelor's of science in education program, majoring in early childhood education.

• Hunter Bridge of Madison, who has matriculated at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, has been awarded a PCA&D Institutional Merit Scholarship and a Presidential Merit Scholarship.

• Wyatt Hudson of Madison completed an 86-day wilderness expedition traveling in the Rocky Mountains with the National Outdoor Leadership School, from which he received a diploma certifying him as a competent, responsible wilderness traveler and leader.

• Ithaca College Graduates: Daniel Shirley of Madison earned a bachelor's of science in business administration with a concentration in marketing and currently works for Shore Publishing/The Source; and Jack Shirley of Madison earned a bachelor's of science in business administration with concentrations in marketing and management and currently works for Kick4Life in New York City.

• Peter Jessey of Killingworth was inducted into the University of New Haven's chapter of Sigma Beta Delta, an international honor society that recognizes achievements in business, management, and administration.

• Angela Jones of Madison, a student at Goodwin College, was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the National Associate Degree Honor Society.

• Daniel Keavy of Killingworth earned a bachelor's of science in chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

• Nicholas Kennedy of Madison earned a master's of science in education from Wilkes University.

• John Kessler of Killingworth, a Xavier High School student, attended the Washington Workshops Congressional Seminar as a result of winning the Congressional Essay Contest sponsored by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.

• The Killingworth Foundation awarded cash prizes to the HK Middle School's 7th-grade Memorial Day Poetry Contest winners Julie Kelly (first place), Tait Brencher (second place), and Caris Caples (third place).

• Lauren E. Blewett, daughter of Eileen and Todd Blewett, is the recipient of this year's Killingworth Foundation Achievement Award. The Marjorie Kirk Ullrich Scholarship for Fine Arts has been awarded to Nicole Cianci, daughter of James and Wendy Cianci. Both are graduates of Haddam-Killingworth High School. Blewett is headed to Boston College as a biology student on a pre-med track. Cianci will attend the University of Hartford pursuing a dual major in English and fine arts.

• Nicholas Konstantino of Killingworth was awarded a bachelor's of science in interactive media and game development with distinction from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

• Heather Lodge of Madison earned a bachelor's of arts in history and education from Merrimack College.

• Caitlin J. Lomazzo, the daughter of Dorothy and John Lomazzo of Madison, was a respondent at Hamilton College's inaugural undergraduate philosophy conference, "Philosophy of Film and Television." Lomazzo was the respondent for "Orlando's Agency: Omnipotent in Potter and Nonexistent in Woolf," by Cecilia Sebastian of the John Hopkins University. Lomazzo is a sophomore majoring in English.

• Charles Lovejoy, a freshman at Skidmore College and the son of Andrew and Anne Lovejoy of Madison, was selected for membership in the Periclean Honors Forum, which works to strengthen intellectual life at Skidmore and to encourage the academic aspirations of highly motivated and talented students.

• PFC Tucker James MacGregor of Madison graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. MacGregor successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at Parris Island as one of 67 recruits in Training Platoon 3002 Lima Company 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. While in basic training, MacGregor received his Rifle Expert Badge. The son of Scott and Tricia MacGregor, he is currently stationed at Camp Leguene in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He is also the grandson of Ann Rickert of Madison and the late James J. Rickert, and Mr. and Mrs. MacGregor of Clinton.

• Jeffrey M. McMahon of Madison graduated with a bachelor's of arts in political science from Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts.

• Shannon Noonan of Madison graduated from Villanova University with a bachelor's of arts.

• Meghan E. O'Sullivan, the daughter of Cynthia and Richard O'Sullivan of Madison, received the Community Service Memorial Prize Scholarship at Hamilton College. O'Sullivan is a junior double-majoring in comparative literature and public policy. She established two campus service clubs at Hamilton College, "Active Minds," a mental-health awareness club, for which she is president, and "Sidekicks," a mentorship program. O'Sullivan also served as an Outreach Adventure Leader to incoming freshmen, was chosen as a "Levitt Leader," has served as a resident advisor, and is a member of the executive board of the college's community service and outreach organization. She received funding through the Kirkland Endowment at Hamilton College for her research entitled, "Oral Expression of Refugee Women." She hopes to go on to earn a Ph.D. and possibly work for the United Nations.

• Chris Pfrommer, a senior at the University of Rhode Island, spent a three-week internship aboard the Okeanos Explorer, a research ship operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The purpose of the trip was to create high resolution maps of the New England seamounts, part of an underwater chain of extinct volcanoes. Pfrommer is an ocean engineering major from Killingworth.

• Jana Pietrzyk of Madison was honored with a Recognition of Student Excellence at the Champlain College Core Division third annual Awards Ceremony. Pietrzyk is majoring in professional writing.

• Kristina Pink of Killingworth received an associate's in science in nursing from Goodwin College.

• Leah Plummer of Madison, the daughter of Maggie Cohn and Dean Plummer, earned a liberal arts degree in geography, magna cum laude, from Macalester College. She also received the Geography Department Merit Award.

• Nicole Poulter of Madison earned a degree in music therapy from Berklee College of Music.

• Laura Smith, the daughter of Drs. Smith will attend the University of Notre Dame and plans to major in psychology. She is a National Merit Commended Scholar and won a Presidential Scholarship. • Kelly Anne Sosensky of Madison was inducted into Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization, at the University of Connecticut.

• Melissa Meghan Sosensky graduated summa cum laude from the University of Connecticut with a major in allied health sciences and a minor in psychology. She is a two-time recipient of the university's New England Scholar award. Sosensky will be attending the Yale University School of Nursing this fall, pursuing a master's degree in pediatric nursing and a career as an APRN. • Jonathan Denton and Charles Bratches, students at Daniel Hand High School in Madison, won second place in the high school division of the Student Voices video contest held by the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS) and the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS). The students created a short video highlighting their best ideas for improving education. The award was a $700 scholarship.

Career Achievements

• Attorney Keith Ainsworth of Madison has been unanimously elected chair of the Connecticut Bar Association's Environmental Law Section. Ainsworth, 48, is a partner at Evans, Feldman & Ainsworth. He is an environmental and land use attorney recognized for championing conservation causes and a frequent lecturer on environmental law and litigation. He also serves as statewide counsel to Trout Unlimited and special counsel to Rivers Alliance and numerous other organizations and corporations.

• Juliet Brett, formerly of Madison, played the title character of Iris in Long Wharf Theatre's production of Still Life with Iris. Brett grew up in Madison and attended Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven before moving to New York City. She has acted in multiple projects, including the Tina Fey film Admission and a soon-to-be-released Noah Baumbauch film.

• Attorney William H. Clendenen, Jr. was installed as vice president of the Connecticut Bar Association (CBA). Clendenen is the founder and principal of Clendenen & Shea LLC in New Haven. He has argued numerous appeals in the Connecticut Appellate and Supreme Courts, and in the Second Circuit. He services as a Special Master for the United States District Court in Connecticut and as an attorney trial referee in the Connecticut Superior Court. He is active in local, state, and national bar groups. Among Clendenen's CBA activities include chair of the Federal Judiciary Committee. He is also a member of the Consumer Law Section, Federal Practice Section, Pro Bono Committee, and the Task Force on the Independence of the Judiciary.

• Dennis W. Cole, CPA, CVA of Madison has been appointed a member of the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants (CTCPA) Advisory Council, representing the Educational Trust Fund as its chair. Cole is a principal with the firm of Beers, Hamerman & Company, P.C. in New Haven. He holds a bachelor's of science in accounting from Villanova University.

• Laurie Friedler of Madison created an English translation of author Sixto Paz Wells' Spanish-language Tanis and the Magical Valley: A Journey Through the Inca Heartland.

• William Hendrick of Madison has joined Simsbury Bank as a mortgage loan officer. Hendrick works directly with home buyers and homeowners to obtain the financing they need to achieve their goals. Hendrick has mortgage lending experience with a variety of brokers in Connecticut and is a former member of the Town of Orange Police Department.

• The late Richard Kaufmann was posthumously awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of New Haven. Kaufmann, who earned his bachelor's degree from UNH in 1967, died in 2012. His degree was accepted by his children, Kenneth Kaufmann and Laura Miranto. Kaufmann founded Thermal Engineering of Arizona. The inventor of a continuous flow laundry system, Kaufmann held five U.S. patents. He also designed the fire house in North Madison, where he served as president and was a longtime volunteer.

• Jen Malaguti of Killingworth has become an independent consultant with Tastefully Simple Inc., a national direct sales company featuring more than 60 easy-to-prepare foods.

Service Awards and Recognitions

• Clifford and Jane Bechtold of Madison received the Clelia Merloni Leadership Award from the sisters of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The award honors organizations and individuals who model the Apostles' ideals of compassion and service.

• Jacqueline Connell was presented with a Life Membership in the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut (FGCC) from the Garden Club of Madison. Connell is an Accredited NGC Judge, a FGCC Master Landscape Design Council Member, FGCC Gardening Consultants' Council Member, and NGC Master Environmental Consultant, and is finishing work to receive the NGC Five-Star Award. Since joining the club in 2006, she has advanced to become the new president of the Federated Garden Club of Connecticut.

• Bridle Path Conservancy Officers: Trish Panico of Madison, president; Marlisa Simonson of Killingworth, secretary. The BPC is a local non-profit group dedicated to preserving passive, multi-use trails in Connecticut.

• Chief Jack Drumm received the Distinguished Chief Award from the Police Commissioners Association of Connecticut, Inc. for his service to the people of Madison. The award is given to those who have exceptional accomplishments and exemplify dedication to duty and outstanding leadership.

• Gwenyth Hall Dunbar of Madison received an honorary bachelor's of arts in liberal studies from Colby-Sawyer College. The honorary degree recognizes an individual of humanitarian character and superior intellect whose life and work have brought about positive, far-reaching consequences for individuals and organizations. Dunbar attended Colby Junior College as a scholarship student in the Medical Technology Program with the Class of 1950 and was a counselor and a member of the Key Association and the Athletic Association. She and husband have supported college priorities, including the proposed Fine and Performing Arts Center. To recognize their arts center support, a Graphic Design Studio will be named in their honor.

• Robert Francis of Madison received the Madison Sayles HEALTH Award from United Way. For more than 35 years, Francis has provided leadership on behalf of children and families at Stratford Community Services, United Way of Eastern Fairfield County, CT Department of Children and Families, and RYASAP (Regional Youth Adult Social Action Partnership). He is co-founder of Connecticut Public Allies, Bridgeport Safe Neighborhoods AmeriCorps Partnership, the Connecticut Assets Network, and the Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance, and he is active in more than 22 state and national boards and commissions. He lives in Madison with his wife Holly and has three children and four grandchildren.

• The portrait of Army Captain Andrew Pedersen-Keel of Madison, a soldier killed in Afghanistan, was added to the Wall of Honor in the State Capitol complex. Pedersen-Keel, a 28-year-old Special Forces commander, was killed when an Afghan policeman opened fire inside a police headquarters in eastern Afghanistan.

• David F. Swensen of Killingworth received the 2013 CAIS Award at Hamden Hall Country Day School. Swensen is Yale University's Chief Investment Officer.
