In the Vault: A virtual genealogy workshop

Connecticut’s town clerks hold vital records and deeds, but also other sources of information that can help build your family tree. At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, a virtual workshop led by Bryna O’Sullivan of Charter Oak Genealogy will be sponsored by Waterford Public Library. Sprague Public Library in Baltic programs

An Intro to Food Canning class will be taught at Sprague Public Library at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27. Registration required by calling the library at 860-822-3012.

In addition, there’s a Kids Krafts Satuday at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 23. Create a unique bookmark (or two!) with a technique that uses paper punches and contact paper. Registration helpful, but not required.

Old Lyme Town Band seeks new members

The Old Lyme Town Band is looking for new members for the start of its 49th season on Monday, Sept. 18. Rehearsals are held from 7-9 p.m. on Monday nights at Christ the King Church, 1 McCurdy Road in Old Lyme. All instruments and abilities are welcome. Five concerts will be held this season in December at various area locations, including Dec. 13 at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. Understanding Artificial Intelligence

Mystic & Noank Library will try to demystify the world of Artificial Intelligence at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in a discussion that explores how it's shaping various aspects of our society, from healthcare and entertainment to education and business.

Fungi Frenzy: a beginner’s guide

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18 at Mystic & Noank Library, discover the magic of backyard mushroom growing with a master gardener Mark Gostkiewicz during a hands-on workshop where you'll learn the ins and outs of cultivating three easy-to-grow mushroom varieties: Shiitakes, Oysters, and Wine Caps.

Crafts and conversation at the Bill

The Bill Memorial Library in Groton City hosts meetings of the Creator’s Club featuring crafters every second Saturday of the month from 10:30 to noon. The program began Saturday, Sept. 9, for artists, writers, and crafters of all ages. It is free and there are no commitments — drop in as you please. A paranormal investigation and fundraiser

An interactive paranormal investigation will be conducted at Mystic & Noank Library by "the Haunted Collector" John Zaffis and Seaside Shadows haunted history tour guides to help support the Mystic & Noank Library's annual fund. Register for one of two sessions: either 6 to 8:30 p.m. or 9 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23. Tickets are $75 each.

Attendees will receive a short presentation on the history of Mystic & Noank Library, its ghostly sightings, and how to investigate historic sites. For the remainder of the evening, guests will ghost hunt/investigate the library to see which specters wander the bookshelves, balconies and basement. To register, call 860-536-7721.

Alzheimer’s Walk Sept. 23 at Ocean Beach

The Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is holding its 2023 Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Eastern CT on Sept. 23 at Ocean Beach Park in New London.

WTNH News8 Anchor and Reporter Sarah Cody and local running legend Jim Roy of Groton will serve as emcees. Jim lost his mother to Alzheimer’s and Sarah honors all of those dealing with dementia she has met through her years of storytelling.

Susan Mandeville of Colchester and Kevin Harris of Deep River are serving as co-chairs of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Eastern CT 2023. To register, go to act.alz.org/easternct or alz.org/walk to sign up for any of six walks in Connecticut this fall.

North Stonington schoolhouse fundraiser

Keeping North Stonington Affordable is holding a fundraiser from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Trillium Farm, 66 E. Clarks Falls Road, North Stonington to help preserve the town’s one-room historic 1840s schoolhouse.

The event, $50 per person, includes food, beer, drinks, line dancing, raffle items, silent auction and a variety of other activities.

KNSA’s mission is to assure that the people of North Stonington can find housing within their budgets.

Block party in Norwich Saturday

Norwich Youth, Family, and Recreation are hosting the first Block Party for the City of Norwich from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23 at Dickenman & Depina fields, 75 Mohegan Road. A video game bus, a 40-foot inflatable obstacle course, live DJ, resources for families, ice cream truck, and much more will be on hand.

Bus transportation will be at three different locations: Coming to the event, from Wequonnoc School at 11:30 a.m., Greenville Playground at 11:45 a.m., and Jenkins Park at noon. The outgoing bus will leave the 3 p.m., with dropoff at Jenkins Park at 3:10, Greenville Playground at 3:25, and Wequonnoc School at 3:45.
