    Waterford, Old Lyme bands hold joint concert today

    The Waterford Community and Old Lyme Town bands will hold a joint concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28 in the Robert Gaucher Auditorium at Ledyard High School. Titled “Legends and Lore: A Symphonic Saga,” the Waterford Community Band will open the concert with a slate of songs directed by Zach Thomas, followed by the Old Lyme Town Band under the direction of Richard Chiappetta, and then the two bands will combine to play four songs. Admission is free.

    Plant sale in Groton runs through May 11

    Groton Public Schools Student Nutrition Services/Food Services Department is hosting its annual Mother's Day Plant Sale from now through May 11. This year, all proceeds will benefit families struggling with school meal debt.

    The events are held at the Fitch High School Greenhouse on the following days and times: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday; 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.

    Evening of poetry at Mystic & Noank Library

    National Poetry Month will be celebrated from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, at the Mystic & Noank Library. The evening will feature local poets reading their own work, and local readers reading a favorite poem.

    Resident poet Philip Kuepper will read his poem, “The Minefield of the Imagination.” Gail Turgeon will read “Mixology, German Stock, and Good Grief.” Poets Colin Goedecke, Ery Caswell, and Lyd Currey will also read their own poems. Bruce Jones of the Groton Town Council will read “The Cremation of Sam McGee” by Robert Service, and Kevin Booker of Booker Enterprises will choose a favorite poem to read. Chris Bradley will read “Putting on the Garment of Water and Light by Philip Kuepper.” Philip will close the evening with his poem, “A Flowering Spring.”

    Norwich Toastmasters meeting Wednesday

    Norwich Toastmasters meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month and to provide an opportunity to learn how to improve your communication and leadership skills. Next meeting is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at the Congregational Church of Salem’s Community Building across the street from the church at 244 Hartford Road, Salem.

    Plant sale in Pawcatuck on May 1

    The Stanton-Davis Homestead Museum will host a fundraising plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 1 at 576a Greenhaven Road, Pawcatuck.

    The sale will be held on the front lawn and will feature locally grown trees, plants and perennials; fruits and jams as well as garden tools. Funds raised will help in the restoration of this National Landmark, which will be open for tours. For information, visit www.stanton-davishomestead.org.

    East Lyme library hosts May events

    Baby sign language will be taught from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays from May 1-22 at East Lyme Public Library, just one of many programs on tap during the month.

    Spring Sing & Stomp for All Ages is scheduled from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursdays from May 2-23 in the Community Center Activity Room.

    Also, Pajama Storytime for All Ages will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, May 13 in the Olive Chendali Room, co-sponsored by the Mom’s Club of East Lyme.

    Children ages 6 and up can also Read to Hazel, a Therapy Dog, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays. To register, call 860-739-6926 ext. 2 or stop by the Children’s Room.

    On May 7, Dental Health Storytime with special guest Maureen Joiner from Children’s Dental Associates.

    Adult activities are highlighted by Trivia Night at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the East Lyme Senior Center, and a Novel Book Group with Pat Kmiecik at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in the East Lyme Room, and the Men's Book Group with Rich Steel at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22 in the East Lyme Room.

    May kids activities at Groton Public Library

    Activities in May at Groton Public Library start with the Wednesday Sing & Stomp at 10 a.m. on the 1st and 8th of the month.

    Another fun event will be Read with Major the dog at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, and there will be Family Grab & Go: Book Bags from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, May 13, available while supplies last. Bring your bag home and decorate it using your own supplies and talent. One crafter will be chosen to win a Library swag bag. Another Grab & Go is planned from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 20.

    Art is also in the air with kids age 5-plus making springtime flowers at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, and Preschool Story Art at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 16.

    At 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, celebrate Public Works Week in a child-focused playgroup for young children and their caregivers. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with others, make new friends, and learn by playing in a literacy-enriched environment.

    Prayer event held May 2 in Jewett City

    The National Day of Prayer is celebrated on the first Thursday of May, and locally an event will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. May 2 at the gazebo at Veteran’s Park on Ashland Street in Jewett City.

    Take a theatrical ride May 3 in New London

    The Exploratory Playwriting Program that functions in association with Flock MakerSpace and the Garde Arts Center will showcase student work at the New London Thames Club’s Presidents' Room, Friday, May 3, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and performances starting at 6:15.

    The curriculum is taught by local writer Nicholas Checker, who promises an emotional ride for audience members as they bear witness to the plights of single-character plays with a wide range of plots and characters.

    Colonial Day in Norwich on May 4

    Colonial Day on the Norwichtown Green will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4, and the event sponsored by the Leffingwell House Museum and Norwich Historical Society includes the season opening of the Joseph Carpenter Silversmith Shop and the Daniel Lathrop Schoolhouse.

    Experience what it was like when the green was the center of social and commercial life in Norwich with crafts and traveling merchants. Enjoy period music with Bob & Kelly, have a cup of Pewter Pot Fine Chocolate, browse the wares of Big Bear Trading Company and watch as Scott the Blacksmith shows off his skills. Discover a soldier’s life with the 6th CT Regiment.

    Star Wars Day at Bill Memorial

    The Bill Memorial Library in the City of Groton invites Jedi and Sith of all ages to celebrate Star Wars Day on Saturday, May 4 by stopping by the library during regular hours to pick up a free “Star Wars” bookmark, poster book and activity packet for kids, while supplies last.

    Fill out a ballot with your favorite Star Wars character and you could win a backpack full of Star Wars swag, including a LEGO kit. For information, call 860-445-0392.

    Grave marking ceremony May 4 in Old Lyme

    On Saturday, May 4, the Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will hold an SAR grave marking ceremony for African American patriot Prince Crosley, who was enslaved to Deputy Gov. Matthew Griswold of Lyme, and later enlisted as a Revolutionary War soldier to obtain his freedom.

    The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at Duck River Cemetery, 12 McCurdy Road, Old Lyme. The ceremony is open to the public.

    Teen events in May at Groton library

    Teens entering grades 6-12 have several opportunities to attend events in May at Groton Public Library, including Teen Study Hours from 3-5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

    Also this month, teens can drop by from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday, May 4, or 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 6, to sign up for volunteer positions at the library.

    Other events center on art, including Teen Drop-In Craft from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7; Anime Crafts at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8; Teen Art at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9; Craft Night at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 13; and Teen Take & Make from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 20.

    ‘Fair Winds’ concert May 5 in New London

    The U.S. Coast Guard Band presents a free concert, "Fair Winds,” at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5 in Leamy Concert Hall on the Coast Guard Academy campus.

    Comedy night May 10 in Old Saybrook

    A fundraiser comedy night for Thames River Community Service featuring Dave Reilly and a small silent auction with light foods and a cash bar will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 10 at The Estuary, 220 Main St. in Old Saybrook.

    Thames River Community Service provides housing with support services for young adults ages 18–24 who have been homeless. Support services include employment assistance, financial literacy and tenancy skills.

    Lyme Grange holds plant sale May 11

    The annual plant sale of the Lyme Grange on Hamburg Road will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11, the day before Mother’s Day.

    COMO holds fundraiser May 11

    The Stonington Community Center will hold its annual fundraiser gala, Stars Over Stonington, with cocktails, live and silent auctions, dinner, and dancing from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the picturesque Stone Acres Farm.

    North Stonington Lions announce scholarships

    College-bound North Stonington high school seniors have until May 17 to submit applications for the annual North Stonington Lion Warren Bishop Scholarships.

    Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded based on demonstrated public service. Applications are available at local high school guidance departments.

    Bozrah Memorial Day Parade to be held May 25

    Bozrah Memorial Day Parade activities will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25.

    The day will start with a short ceremony at the Veterans Memorial, while the parade will gather rain or shine at the entrance of Schwartz Road and kick off at 1 p.m., ending at the Moose Lodge for refreshments, music and an awards ceremony.

    Artreach show comes to Groton airport

    The Cultural Coalition’s Art at the Airport spring exhibit, “The Color of Sound” presented by Artreach Inc. will be on view through June 30 at Groton-New London Airport in the airport’s main terminal located at 155 Tower Ave. in Groton.

    The free exhibit features original artwork of different media created by its program members. The artists, adults living with psychiatric diagnoses, are led by master teaching artist Faith Satterfield.
