Sun acquire former Hillhouse star Bria Holmes in trade

Mohegan — The Connecticut Sun acquired former Hillhouse High School star Bria Holmes from the Atlanta Dream on Thursday for its second round pick in tonight’s WNBA Draft (No. 15 overall) and next season’s second round pick.

Holmes will miss this season due to pregnancy. Connecticut now has two picks in the draft, No. 9 (first round) and No. 33 (third round).

ESPN2 will broadcast the first round at 7 p.m., and ESPNU will have the second and third rounds.

Holmes, a 6-foot-1 guard, was drafted 11th overall by Atlanta in 2016. She’s averaged 7.6 points and 2.7 rebounds over two seasons and started 13 games last year. She averaged 15.5 points during Atlanta’s two 2016 playoff games.

“We are ecstatic about the opportunity to acquire Bria Holmes,” Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said. “Bria is an outstanding wing who will thrive in our up-tempo offensive system. She has great length and has already proven to be a disruptive defender at the WNBA level.”

Holmes helped Hillhouse win three straight CIAC championships and was a unanimous All-Big 12 first team pick in each of her final three seasons at West Virginia. She finished her career ranked third in Mountaineer history with 2,001 points and 731 made field goals, and was the first player to scored 500 or more points in three straight seasons.

The Day will provide draft updates tonight for the Sun as well as UConn draftees Kia Nurse, Azura Stevens, and Gabby Williams.
