A federal grand jury in New Haven today returned a three-count indictment charging a 28-year-old Norwich man with firearm and drug-related crimes, U.S. Attorney David B. Fein announced.

The indictment alleges that on Oct. 2, Theodore Jones, also known as "Ish" and "William Wooley," was in possession of .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol and ammunition along with heroin, which he intended to distribute.

Prior to that date, the indictment alleges Jones was convicted of felony drug, burglary and assault offenses. In addition to a heroin possession charge, Jones faces one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking and one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.

The combined charges carry a maximum of 35 years in prison and fines totaling $1.5 million.

Jones has been detained in state custody since his arrest on Oct. 2. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with the assistance of the Norwich police and the New London County State's Attorney's Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John H. Durham.
