A Voluntown man was arrested Wednesday on a six-count federal indictment charging him with possessing and distributing synthetic drugs over the internet and possession of LSD.

Aaron Mioduszewski, 33, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna F. Martinez in Hartford and was detained pending a hearing scheduled for Friday.

According to the office of Acting U.S. Attorney Deidre M. Daly, Mioduszewski is charged with distributing the synthetic drugs, known as controlled substance analogues, through websites he operated, including www.eastcoastchems.com and www.simfluxresources.com. Law enforcement officers who searched his home in July 2012 recovered large quantities of various synthetic drugs, as well as LSD.

Common names for various synthetic drugs are "designer drugs," "bath salts," "spice," and "herbal incense." According to the government, the synthetic drugs mimic the dangerous effects of cocaine, amphetamines and other controlled substances.

A federal grand jury in Hartford returned the indictment on Nov. 5, charging Mioduszewski with four counts of possession with intent to distribute and distribution of controlled substance analogues, one count of possession with intent to distribute controlled substance analogues, and one count of possession with the intent to distribute lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).

If convicted, he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years and a fine of up to $1 million on each count.

The case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration's Tactical Diversion Squad in Worcester, Mass., and is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Natasha Dye.
