Groton Town Police have obtained arrest warrants charging two cousins with burglarizing a home on Orchard Terrace while the occupant was at church.

Jaden Alvarez, 20, of New London and Marcus Delgado, 19, of Groton, already are being held in prison on charges that they carried out a string of crimes in November 2013, including two home invasions.

The newest charges include third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny. The men are accused of forcing open a storm window to gain entry into the home of a woman Alvarez knew and stealing jewelry and coins worth approximately $8,365. Alvarez allegedly pawned several of the stolen items the same day at Silas Dean Pawn in Wethersfield.

The two men had previously been charged with forcing entry into the home of a 91-year-old New London man, masked and wielding a stun gun, and of carrying out another home invasion at the Crystal Avenue home of a man who once lived with Alvarez and attempted to adopt him. They are also accused of a break-in at an ice cream shop where Alvarez once worked and a burglary at the Groton Heights Baptist Church on Broad Street in Groton.

The two men confessed to several crimes when interviewed by New London Police in November, saying they had burglarized the New London home of Alvarez’s adoptive mother, Melanie Baatz, and the Groton home of her best friend, Susan LaFrance, while the women attended services at the Groton Heights Baptist Church.

Alvarez is charged also with possession of a pistol without a permit and possession of a stolen firearm. New London Police said they found Alvarez in possession of a backpack containing a 9-mm pistol that had been stolen out of a Montville home on Nov. 12.

At the time of his arrest, Alvarez was on probation for an undisclosed crime he committed as a youthful offender. He is being held in lieu of $1.1 million bond at the Northern Correctional Institution and is due back in New London Superior Court on Feb. 5. Delgado is being held in lieu of $750,000 at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution.
