A Norwich teenager facing felony robbery charges showed up late for court Tuesday, avoiding the potential of being rearrested on a new felony charge of failure to appear in court.

New London Superior Court Judge Hillary B. Strackbein had issued a re-arrest warrant Tuesday morning for 18-year-old Hassan Foster-Carney after he failed to appear in court a second time. The judge put a “stay” on the re-arrest warrant until 4 p.m. in case Foster-Carney showed up. He arrived in court later in the day, and the judge ordered him to appear Wednesday morning, when his attorney would be present.

Foster-Carney is one of three people accused in the robbery of two men on a moped on July 13, 2013, at the Wendy’s restaurant on Colman Street in New London. One of his co-defendants, Peter Gibson-Huff, allegedly pulled a revolver on the victims and demanded their moped after they refused a request to let him and his friends ride the scooters.

Foster-Carney posted a $50,000 surety bond after he was arrested on charges of first-degree robbery and fifth-degree larceny. He has attended court several times while his attorney, Michael E. Jewell, discussed the case with prosecutor David J. Smith and Judge Hillary B. Strackbein.

Foster-Carney missed his court appearance two weeks ago. The court had sent him letters notifying him of his missed court dates and Jewell said he unsuccessfully attempted to call Foster-Carney. Had Foster-Carney not appeared Tuesday afternoon, his new bond would have been $50,000 cash.
