Norwich tax preparer gets 2 years in prison for fraud

A Norwich tax preparer convicted of federal tax fraud charges was sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison.

David Etienne, 49, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer in New Haven for preparing numerous fraudulent federal tax returns for clients between 2012 and 2021 that included false expenses and losses.

Etienne’s criminal conduct involved tax loss of about $600,000, affecting the IRS and the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services, authorities said.

Etienne pleaded guilty in September to aiding and assisting in the preparation of a false income tax return. Free on a $100,000 bond, Etienne is required to report to prison on Feb. 28.

Additional court proceedings are planned to determine restitution. Etienne’s prison sentence will be followed by one year of supervised release.
