Man found not guilty in Mashantucket stabbing

A judge in New London has ruled that a former Baltimore, Md., man charged with first-degree assault in a stabbing of a man on the Mashantucket Pequot reservation in 2018 is not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

As a result of the verdict, Dontae Glen Johnson, 48, will be committed for an undetermined amount of time to the Whiting Forensic Hospital in Middletown. The ruling by Judge Shari Murphy on Tuesday followed a two-day trial in New London Superior Court.

Johnson had faced charges of first-degree assault and third-degree larceny for stabbing William Johnson III, who is not related to Dontae Glen Johnson, in the face and neck and taking his car on Oct. 16, 2018. Dontae Glen Johnson was previously diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type and cannabis use disorder.

Shari ordered Dontae Glen Johnson to be held at Whiting for an evaluation. He is due back in court on Aug. 9.
