Sun’s Brionna Jones earns Sixth Player of the Year honors
Connecticut Sun coach Curt Miller, in the midst of a travel day Thursday, was unavailable to comment on Connecticut’s Brionna Jones winning the WNBA’s Sixth Woman of the Year Award, as chosen by a national media panel.
But Miller has certainly had his opinion in recent days as to who should earn that honor.
“If Bri Jones doesn’t win the Sixth Player of the Year Award, it’s criminal,” Miller said recently. “She’s done everything we can ask for. She just, she dominates in her minutes played, in her efficiency, she’s just been absolutely terrific.
“She was an All-Star coming off the bench, which how often has that happened in the history of our league that a true sixth man was also named to the All-Star team? There’s great players in this league but I think that’s about as easy an award choice as there is this year.”
Jones received 53 of 56 votes. The Chicago Sky’s Azurá Stevens received two votes and Myisha Hines-Allen of the Washington Mystics earned one.
Jones, in her sixth season, was Connecticut’s second-leading scorer (13.8 ppg) and averaged 5.1 rebounds.
It was the second year in a row Jones was honored. She was named the Most Improved Player last season after setting career-highs in points (14.7 ppg) and rebounds (7.3) in addition to earning second team WNBA All-Defensive Team honors.
Jones is the third Sun player to win a league award this week. Forwards Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas were chosen to the All-Defensive Team second team.
Connecticut will host the defending champion Chicago Sky in Game 3 of their best-of-five WNBA semifinal series on Sunday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena (1 p.m., ESPN2). The series is tied.
