    Pretzels on a roll

A waffle pretzel with Nutela, cinnamon, and vanilla ice cream at the Malted Barley in Westerly.

All of a sudden everyone is making sandwiches with pretzels. Wendy’s and Ruby Tuesday are putting burgers on pretzels; Sonic is serving a hot dog on one.

Of course, Malted Barley has been doing this since they opened in Westerly. The Barley has rightfully gained a reputation as one of the best beer bars in the Rhode Island/Connecticut area. Where else could you go tonight and get a pint of Green Flash Brewing’s Citra Session IPA, Wells & Young Banana Bread or Larkin’s Dry Irish Stout?

But the Barley is also becoming known for its pretzels, which are great appetizers to go along with your ale or served as a sandwich.

I’ve tried two and both were outstanding. The caprese comes with tomato, mozzarella, basil and a balsamic reduction. My favorite has cannellini, walnut, cranberry and goat cheese pate, sliced pear and arugula.

On our most recent visit to Westerly, we also enjoyed a waffle pretzel with nutella and vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Check out the rest of the menu here.

Have you been to the Barley and tried a pretzel?
