Calhoun on BC rumors: "I'm not seeking a job."
Rumors are swirling that former UConn coach Jim Calhoun is interested into the Boston College job.
Report: Jim Calhoun Interested in BC Job
ESPN reported that Calhoun has "significant interest" in the opening. BC recently fired head coach Steve Donahue.
That's not the case, according to Calhoun, who grew up in Braintree, Mass.
"I'm not trying to get back into basketball," Calhoun said. "I'm not seeking a job."
Calhoun, 71, retired from coaching in September 2012. Health issues played a factor in his decision.
He earned legendary status, winning 873 games during his Hall of Fame career at both UConn and Northeastern. He guided UConn to 17 Big East tournament and regular season championships and three national championships.
He's enjoying retirement and spending time with his family.
Calhoun coaching at BostonCollege doesn't make sense on several levels. There's a heated rivalry between the two schools. Calhoun vowed never to play BC when the Eagles bolted for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
During a conversation this afternoon, Calhoun repeated several times that he hasn't talked to anybody about any job. But he hasn't completely ruled out returning to the sidelines.
"I miss some parts (of coaching) and some parts I don't miss…," Calhoun said. "Never say never, but I haven't set up anything with anybody else to talk about a job."
UConn is practicing here at First Niagara Arena today, preparing to play Villanova at 9:40 p.m. Saturday in the NCAA tournament East Region third round action. The Huskies also will meet with the media.
Calhoun attended Thursday's 89-81 overtime win overSaint Joseph's University, but he planned to stay away from the arena today. He doesn't want to deal with the questions about the BC job.
"The biggest thing is I want us to beat Villanova Saturday," Calhoun said.
