Arlington, Mass. - Thomas F. Dolan Jr. M.D., professor emeritus of Pediatrics at Yale University of Medicine, died Sunday Sept. 28, 2008, after a prolonged illness.

He was the widower of Margaret (McCarthy) Dolan. He was born March 2, 1928, in Cambridge Mass, the son of the late Thomas F. Dolan Sr. and Agnes (Masterson) Dolan.

Dr. Dolan attended public school in Arlington Mass., and graduated from Arlington High School in 1945. He is a graduate of Harvard College (1949) and Harvard Medical School (1953). He trained at Boston Children's Hospital, and the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md. He spent 40 years on the active faculty of the Medical School and as an attending physician at Yale New Haven Hospital. His particular interest was lung disease in infants and children. He was the director of the cystic fibrosis clinic at Yale for 25 years.

He published many papers and book chapters concerning cystic fibrosis and lung disease. He was involved both at Yale and nationally in the development of the Pediatric Nurse Practioner programs. He served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service. Dr. Dolan was a past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, as well as a member of the Society of Pediatric Research, and the American Thoracic Society.

He was an avid golfer at the Madison Country Club. He also enjoyed gardening and fishing at his camp in Franklin, Maine. He was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church Madison.

Dr. Dolan is survived by a daughter, Karen Garner and her husband, Stephen of Bolton, Mass.; son, Kevin Dolan and his wife, Lorraine (Kirst) of Madison; a daughter, Maureen Dolan and her husband, David Brown of Seattle, Wash. and daughter, Evelyn R. Dolan of Fitchburg, Mass. He also leaves four grandchildren, Brady, Keara, Ryan, and Kirsten Dolan, all of Madison.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Christopher M. Dolan and a brother, Leo Dolan.

Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 2, 2008, at the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Rd., Madison. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday Oct. 3, 2008, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, Academy St., Madison with committal to follow in West Cemetery Madison.
