    Jury finds McGill not guilty in Vernell Marshall slaying

        A Norwich jury has found that Curtis McGill Jr. was not guilty of conspiring to murder Vernell Marshall in downtown New London in June 2007.

       The jury began deliberating Thursday afternoon and reached its verdict today about 2:30 p.m.

       McGill, 24, had been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and murder. He was arrested in January along with two others -- alleged gunman Kurtis Turner and alleged co-conspirator Jonathan Fuller. McGill had pleaded not guilty and requested a speedy trial, which took place over several days before Judge Kevin P. McMahon.

       "We respect the verdict," said Stephen M. Carney, who had prosecuted the case along with John P. Gravalec-Pannone.

       McGill's attorney, Richard P. Silverstein of New Haven, could not immediately be reached for comment.
