Nathan Hale Schoolhouse to be moved again

New London  -- Nathan Hale Schoolhouse will be moved yet again over two days beginning Jan. 5.

The 235-year-old school where the titular Revolutionary War hero once taught has been in five different locations in the city.

This time, the 1,200-square-foot building will be moved to its own plaza across Atlantic Street, as part of the ongoing redesign of the Parade.

Sons of The American Revolution member Stephen Shaw, the property’s steward, said preliminary work on the move to its new spot across Atlantic Street will begin Saturday.

The public is invited to watch the actual move of the building, though viewing areas will be subject to safety restrictions from police and the construction company.

Also, Atlantic Street, which runs behind Citizens Bank and The Day from Eugene O’Neill Drive to Water Street, will be closed during the move.

The school’s new location will be about two blocks away from where the building originally stood in 1773.
