Anyone remember the 1987 Rolling Stone article that touted two acts as the greatest unsigned bands in the land?
I freakin’ do. MY band wasn’t one of them.
Anyway, you’ve heard of one of the groups because they’re still a (relatively) big deal. Jane’s Addiction.
The other? Well, it was Tommy Conwell & the Young Rumblers.
Doesn’t ring a bell?
Well, TC and his Rumblers DID sign a big contract, and they DID have a few of their perfectly crafted roadhouse pop songs that resonated in a “Is that the Hooters or Bryan Adams? Neither?! Coulda fooled me!” fashion. The quasi-hits are “If We Never Meet Again,” “I’m Not Your Man” and “I’m Seventeen.”
After that, though … they vanished – or so I thought.
All these years later, Tommy Conwell & the HouseRockers – not to be confused with the Young Rumblers, unless the Young Rumblers grew up to be the HouseRockers – are playing a free show Friday in the HiltonMystic!
I suspect Tommy will be really jaded or joyous, and it’ll be interesting to see which.
Tommy Conwell and the HouseRockers, 6 p.m. Friday, HiltonMystic, 20 Coogan Blvd., Mystic; . (860) 572-0731.
