Feeling ‘Vulnerable’
It’s been four years since the marvelous writer Sigrid Nunez graced Stonington’s La Grua Center shortly after she’d won the National Book Award for her novel “The Friend.” During a talk, reading and Q&A session, Nunez charmed a full house with anecdotes, wisdom and wry commentary.
No reason to suspect she’ll do otherwise Thursday when she appears at Bank Square Books in Mystic on behalf of her latest, “The Vulnerables.” A novel inspired by and set in Manhattan during the COVID lockdown, “The Vulnerables” uses a relationship between the unnamed narrator and Eureka, the parrot for whom she’s unwittingly bird-sitting while its owner is stuck on the West Coast. From that fragile scenario, expect Nunez, a former writer-in-residence at the James Merrill House, to wittily and thoughtfully explore aging, vulnerability and loneliness, and the decay of our culture.
Sigrid Nunez, 6 p.m. Thursday, Bank Square Books, 53 West. Main St., Mystic; free; banksquarebooks.com, (860) 536-3795.
