    Still rockin’ the blues

    Popa Chubby (submitted)

Blues-rock guitar maestro Popa Chubby’s latest release is a double-disc in-concert document called “Live at G. Bluey’s Juke Joint NYC.” Many things occurred to me whilst digesting this information.

    1. How come “Popa” doesn’t have two “p”s. Poppa. Or an “a” instead of an “o.” Papa. Because the way it’s spelled — and maybe it’s just me — I’m inclined to instinctively pronounce it “Pope-ah.” And I don’t think the Chub Man wants the “pope” sounding pronunciation.

    2. Speaking of odd names: I realize there’s almost 10 million people living in New York City, but what are the odds that a “G. Bluey” would live there AND own a juke joint? That’s like being named Scalpel K. Meniscus and you end up being an orthopedic surgeon!

    3. It’s excellent to see the Chub Man still doing it. The dude is a scorching player, songwriter and entertainer, and he’ll do a New Year’s Eve Eve show at The Kate in Old Saybrook.

    Popa Chubby, 8 p.m. Saturday, The Kate, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $41; thekate.org, (860) 510-0453
