Bestselling author Yaa Gyasi discusses new book virtually on Sunday

Bestselling author Yaa Gyasi celebrates her latest book, Transcendent Kingdom," with a virtual reading at 2 p.m. Sunday. The ticketed event is sponsored by Bank Square Books and Savoy Bookshop & Café, and will stream on Crowdcast.

"Transcendent Kingdom" is Gyasi's follow-up to her bestselling "Homecoming," which was a 2017 selection for southeastern Connecticut's "One Book One Region" reading initiative. "Transcendent Kingdom" is a beautifully rendered and multifaceted account of a Ghanaian family living in Alabama. Gifty is a sixth-year PhD candidate in neuroscience studying the neural circuits of addiction and depression. Her goal is personal: Her brother, a gifted athlete, died of a heroin overdose after becoming addicted to Oxycontin following an ankle injury. Her mother is suicidal and bedridden. And Gifty herself seeks spiritual relief and validation even as she works desperately in the hard sciences.

Shani Collins-Achille, associate professor of dance at Connecticut College, will moderate the event. Tickets are $27.95 and include a hardcover copy of "Transcendent Kingdom," a signed bookplate, and a link to the event on Crowdcast. For more information go to www.banksquarebooks.com.
