Connecticut Early Music Festival celebrates 40th anniversary

    Harpsichordist Peter Sykes (Susan Wilson)

Yes, the Connecticut Early Music Festival is back live! Plus, this is the 40th anniversary of the much-loved series, which celebrates composers and works — rendered in historically accurate fashion — from the Medieval, Renaissance and even Baroque eras.

From Friday through Sunday and June 17-19, a variety of performances and workshops will take place at various locations in the area. There are also student workshops and concerts; go to www.ctearlymusic.org for more information.

This week's schedule of evening public concerts:

7:30 p.m. Friday — All Bach Program, Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights, Groton. Artistic Director Ian Watson conducts the Connecticut Early Music Festival Ensemble.

The program: Concerto for oboe and violin in C minor, BWV 1060R; Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052; Cantata 209, Non sa che sia dolore, BWV 209 and Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, BWV 1050.2.

7:30 p.m. Saturday — Harpsichordist Peter Sykes plays Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, St. John's Episcopal Church, 400 Main St., Niantic.

5 p.m. Sunday — George Kent Performance Hall, 119 High St., Westerly. Ian Watson conducts a Restoration Era (1664) entertainment featuring a cast of actors, singers and dancers based around scholar Laurence Senelick's script incorporating elements of Sir William Davenant's adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth." Features incidental music by Henry Purcell, Matthew Locke and John Eccles.

Tickets are $40 each for the public concerts. See the June 16 Night & Day for further scheduling.
