Sugar Ray and the Bluetones entertain Monday in Mystic

If your name is Ray, there is an ancient law that extends beyond legal boundaries and into the traditions of antiquity, that demands your friends will call you by the nickname “Sugar.”

Similar nomenclatural statutes apply to folks named Lou (“Sweet Lou”), Stan (“Stan the Man”), Joe (“Smokin’ Joe”) and, for some reason, Darla (“Lizard-Head Darla”).

Anyway, of all the “Sugar Rays” out there, it’s bluesman Sugar Ray Norcia who is closest to our hearts – at least in this part of the world. A timelessly fine singer and harmonica virtuoso, Norcia continues to lead his excellent Bluetones band as he has for over four decades.

See this “put the blue back in blues” act at the final Blue Monday show of the season in Mystic River Park.

Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, 6-8 p.m. Monday, Mystic River Park, 28 Cottrell St., Mystic; Blue Monday series; free, donations or canned goods benefit Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center and the Stonington Education Fund music programs; see Facebook Blue Monday.
