Celtic-tinged folk to classic rock – Maggie’s Guitar performs “Crossing” at Friday Night Folk on February 10. The evening will benefit Start Fresh, a local non-profit that resettles refugees and other displaced persons.
“Crossing” is a story of love, loss, and, finally, redemption, when a Scottish father and his son reunite in America in the 1800s. It is an immigrant’s tale based on the true story of Thomas Morrison and Francis Victory Cox of Norwich. The musical features original songs written by local musicians Mike Bailey and Ron Gletherow.
Maggie’s Guitar comprises Ron Gletherow on vocals, guitar, keyboard and bass; Margaret Gletherow on guitar and bass; and Mike Bailey on vocals, guitar and bass. Maggie’s Guitar has played venues throughout the Northeast, including the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center in Philadelphia, PA; The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook, CT; the Garde Arts Center in New London, CT; the Small Town Concert Series in Chester, CT; and the Majestic Theater in West Springfield, MA. Maggie’s Guitar records in Gales Ferry, CT, and its releases are available on Spotify.
Start Fresh: Since 2016, Start Fresh has welcomed 8 refugee families (37 individuals) to New London — 3 from Syria, 2 from Sudan, 2 from Afghanistan, and 1 from Honduras. While co-sponsoring these families with Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services (IRIS) of New Haven, CT, local Start Fresh volunteers have rented and furnished apartments, provided rides, and assisted families with food shopping.
