    Call for scholarship applicants

    The New London Maritime Society is accepting applications for the 2013 Reid MacCluggage Black Maritime History Scholarship.

    The $1,000 scholarship competition is open to area high school juniors and seniors who write an essay, short story, poem, play, movie script or novella about the African-American experience in maritime history. A $500 savings bond goes to the runner-up.

    The award honors the commitment of MacCluggage, the former editor and publisher of The Day, to develop multicultural awareness and writing skills in students.

    All entries must be received at the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank St., New London, CT 06320, by 5 p.m. March 1.
