    H.S. roundup: Thames River rallies for 22-14 victory

    Norwich — Logan Starr rushed for three touchdowns and Thames Rivers came up big defensively in the fourth quarter en route to a 22-14 victory over Vinal Tech/Goodwin Tech/Whitney Tech in a Connecticut Technical Conference football game on Saturday at Norwich Tech.

    The Crusaders (3-1, 3-1) turned Vinal away in the fourth as Cole Occhiolino and Wil Korineck combined for a safety and Ismael Rivera Garcia came up with a huge interception.

    Thames River finished with over 300 rushing yards led by Albert Velasquez with 110 yard on 20 carries, Occhiolino with 80 on 16 carries and Josh Brown with 75 on 13 carries. Starr finished with 40 yards.

    "I'm super proud of how these guys played today," Thames River coach Darin Jones said. "Our O-line is getting better and better every week and they are building their confidence ... It was a great win for the program."

    Boys' soccer

    • Wheeler erupted for three goals in the second half to beat Plainfield 3-0 and clinch at least a share of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV championship. The Lions (8-3, 6-0) can win the title outright with a win at Tourtellotte on Friday. Matt Pierce's unassisted goal 20 minutes into the second half broke the scoreless tie and Scott Pion added a pair of late goals for Wheeler, the first one assisted by Ian Spracklin. Goalie Bowen Baker made five saves for the shutout.

    • Ledyard broke open a tight game with six goals in the second half en route to a 7-0 win over New London in an ECC Division II match. Daimon Pollard scored three goals for the Colonels (9-1, 6-0), all assisted by Cole Dirico, while Wes Hughes added one goal and one assist, Alex Warmus converted a penalty kick and Elliott Smith completed the scoring off an assist from Joey Burton. Emmanuel Marin made eight saves for the Whalers (2-10, 0-5).

    • Stonington overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Old Lyme 3-1 in a non-league match. After Evan Getz had given the Wildcats (3-8) the early lead, Sam Montalto converted a pass from Max Wojtas 1:50 into the second half to tie the match, Jamison Magowan broke the tie eight minutes later (R.J. Parrilla assisted) and Billy deCastro, assisted by Ethan Allen, added an insurance goal with 18 minutes left. Goalie Peter Fernholz made two saves for the Bears (9-1) and Ryan Tetreault stopped 10 shots in goal for Old Lyme.

    • Goals by Billy Niles and Dan Kelly lifted St. Bernard to a 2-1 victory over Tourtellotte in an ECC Division IV match. Goalies Mike Whipple and Martin Arvidson combined to make five saves for the Saints (6-4, 4-2).

    • Cole Gustavsen curled in a corner kick in the second for the game's only goal as Bacon Academy defeated Waterford 1-0 in an ECC Division II match. The Lancers are 3-8, 1-5.

    Boys' cross country

    • East Lyme had a solid fifth-place showing in the seeded race of the annual Wickham Park Invite in Manchester. The Vikings finished 193 points while Cumberland (R.I.) won the team title with 152 points. Sam Whittaker led East Lyme on the 5K course by placing sixth in 17 minutes, 8 seconds with Chris Abbey close behind in eighth in 17:18. Noah Barnhart also had a solid showing by placing 29th in 17:50. Fitch finished 17th with 366 and were led by Ian Poe (34th,17:59) and Ryan Powe (45th, 18:14).

    In the unseeded race, Waterford sophomore Aidan Pepin was the top local finish in 26th (17:55) while Ledyard's Simon Reichert was 42nd (18:25) and Waterford's Sam Lenes was 50th (18:30). Ledyard finished 22nd with 581 points and the Lancers were 25th with 18:30.

    Girls' cross country

    • Montville's Mady Whittaker was the top local finisher in the unseeded race at the Wickham Park Invite, placing 11th overall in 21:02. Maddie Gould finished 40th in 22:18 for the Indians, who placed 15th overall in the team standings with 433 points (New Milford won the team title with 81). Three other local runners fared well with St. Bernard's Brigid Kunka placing 18th in 21:24, Fitch's Julia Adrian finishing 27th in 21:56, and Ledyard's Ally Tran just missing the top 50, placing 51st in 22:38. St. Bernard was 18th and Fitch 19th. In the girls' seeded race, Norwich Free Academy's Eve Buckridge placed 43rd in 22:15.

    Volleyball

    • East Lyme won its 11th straight with a 25-17, 25-12 and 25-14 non-conference win over Valley Regional. Brooklyn Geida had four aces for the Vikings (11-1) and Jaylyn Mueller added four assists.

    • East Hampton defeated Old Lyme 25-16, 25-19 and 25-13 in the Shoreline Conference. Leah Fouquette had 13 digs, Katie Reid eight assists and Chandler Munson five kills for the Wildcats (0-11).

    Field hockey

    • Stonington remained unbeaten with a 6-0 win over Haddam-Killingworth in a nonleague game. Ellie Korinek, Keegan Donohue and Miranda Arruda each scored twice for the Bears (9-0-1), who led 5-0 at halftime. Casey Boumenot had two assists and Abby Mann made six saves for Stonington.
