Berlin, New Britain move on up in The Day's coaches' poll

There were so many marquee games in Week 9 of the high school football season that it was bound to shake things up the CIAC playoff rankings and The Day of New London's Top 10 state coaches’ poll.

Berlin and New Britain didn’t so much shake things up as they rocked it.

The Redcoats and Golden Hurricanes both won eye-popping routs over top competition last Friday and moved up in The Day's poll.

Berlin scored 28 first-half points as it dissected then-No. 9 Bloomfield on the road, 37-0. The Redcoats (8-0) moved up one spot to No. 9. The Warhawks (7-1) had scored the sixth-most points (316) prior the loss and are arguably the team to beat in Class S.

New Britain stomped East Hartford, 63-26. The Hornets were was ranked seventh before an Oct. 26 home loss to No. 7 Southington (42-27).

The Hurricanes (7-1) moved up to No. 10, displacing North Haven (7-1), which was tied with Berlin last week. They had lost at home to Southington on Oct. 5, 27-24, when the Blue Knights drove 80 yards in under two minutes and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 36 seconds remaining.

New Britain plays at Berlin on Nov. 9.

The top five remained the same — Darien (8-0, nine first-place votes), Greenwich (7-0, four first-place votes), Hand (8-0), St. Joseph (7-1) and Shelton (7-0), respectively.

No ECC teams received a vote for the fifth straight week.
