    Local roundup: CIAC moves soccer, field hockey finals to Sunday

    The CIAC has moved all of Saturday's soccer and field hockey finals to Sunday in order to ensure host facilities can properly clear their fields of snow.

    The Class S girls' soccer game between Old Lyme and Immaculate will be played at Middletown High School at 5:30 p.m. Other girls' soccer finals include the Class L game between Farmington and Tolland at Veteran's Stadium in New Britain at 3 p.m., and a doubleheader at West Haven with Plainfield and Lewis Mills in Class M at 12:30 p.m., followed by the Class LL game between Ridgefield and Staples at 3 p.m.

    In boys' soccer there will be two doubleheaders. At Middletown High School the Class S game between Old Saybrook and Morgan is at 12:30 p.m., and Maloney and Hand play for the Class L title at 3 p.m. At New Britain's Veteran's Stadium the Class LL final between Glastonbury and Hall is at 12:30 p.m., and Plainville and Ellington play for the Class M title at 5:30 p.m.

    All field hockey finals are at Wethersfield High School. Staples and Cheshire play for the Class L title at 12:30 p.m., Immaculate and Granby play for the Class M title at 2:30 p.m., and Sacred Herart Academy and Guilford play for the Class S title at 4:30 p.m.

    The football game between East Lyme and Branford has also been postponed. The game, scheduled for today, will now be played on Saturday at Branford at 4 p.m.

    Men's basketball

    • Mitchell College opened its season with a 91-82 win over Lehman in UMass Dartmouth's Lafrance tournament. Steffen Brunson had 24 points and eight assists, Domenico Santiago had 19 points and 13 rebounds, Hasani Williams had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Waterford's Landon Peabody came off the bench to score 14 for Mitchell, which plays Umass Dartmouth in Saturday's final at 2 p.m.

    • St. Thomas More lost to Fork Union Military at the National Prep Showcase in New Haven, 79-74. Ghared Boyce scored 23 points for St. Thomas More and teammates Thomas Whyte (15) and Ryo Kobyoshi (13) also scored in double figures.

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College lost its season opener to home Trinity, 80-50, at the Trinity Tip-Off tournament. Kelsey Hernandez had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Amina Wiley had 11 points and seven rebounds for Mitchell, which plays Roger Williams in the consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

    Men's hockey

    • Wesleyan scored three of the last four goals to rally for a 5-4 win over Connecticut College in the season and New England Small College Athletic Coinference opener for both teams. Greg Pezza scored twice, Paul Capozzi and Ryan Petti had goals and Jacob Moreau had three assists for Conn.

    • Ruslan Iskhakov gave UConn an early lead, but UMass-Lowell scored the next four goals as the Huskies lost, 5-2, in a Hockey East game in Hartford. Karl El-Mir added a short-handed goal for UConn (5-6-1, 2-5-1), which outshot the River Hawks (6-5-1, 3-3-1), 40-32. 

    Women's hockey

    • Jordan Cross of Connecticut College scored with five minutes left in regulation to tie the game as the Camels played Amherst to a 2-2 tie in the season and NESCAC opener for both teams. Erin Healy and Ellie Branka assisted on Cross' goal. Sammi Estes had a second-period goal for Conn which Catherine Lawrence and Natalie Witkowski assisted on. Carly Demora made 16 saves for Conn.
