    H.S. baseball: Wheeler's Baker no-hits Putnam at Dodd Stadium

    Norwich — Wheeler High School's Bowen Baker made himself right at home on the Dodd Stadium mound, throwing a no-hitter in a 3-1 victory over Putnam in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV baseball game on Monday.

    Baker pitched a complete game, walking two and striking out 16 while allowing an unearned run.

    Wheeler scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Baker went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Justin Veal had two hits and two RBI. Aiden Cameron also had a hit for the Lions in their season opener.

    In other games:

    • Luke Leonard pitched a complete game, allowing one hit while striking out 10 and walking one, to lift East Lyme past RHAM 11-1 in a non-conference game that lasted five innings. It was the season opener for the Vikings, who broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. Chris Malcom led the way, chipping in a single, double and three RBI, while Nolan Connolly, Owen Robbins and Tommy Mason each had two hits and an RBI for the Vikings. 

    • Ledyard scored seven runs in the second inning on the way to an 11-1 victory over Killingly in an ECC Division II game. Tyler Perkins earned the win, allowing one hit while striking out five and walking three in four innings, while Ken Turner had two hits, two RBI and three stolen bases and Robbie Petriel added two hits and two RBI for the Colonels (2-0, 1-0).

    • Peter Fernholz had two hits and scored the winning run in the 10th inning in Stonington's 3-2 win over St. Bernard in ECC Division III action. The Bears are 1-1, 1-0, and the Saints 0-1, 0-1.

    • Luke Mathewson pitched a one-hitter as Woodstock Academy spoiled New London's season opener with an 11-0, five innning victory in an ECC Division II game. Mathewson also struck out 10 for the Centaurs (2-0, 1-0).

    • Cheney Tech broke open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning en route to a 6-2 win over Grasso Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Robert Holland and Isaac Lathrop each had a hit for the Eagles.
