    H.S. roundup: East Lyme boys rout Bethel in Class M lacrosse opener

    East Lyme — East Lyme erupted for 12 goals in the second half to rout Bethel 17-4 in the qualifying round of the CIAC Class M boys' lacrosse tournament on Saturday.

    The No. 16 Vikings (10-9) advance to play at top-seeded New Fairfield in the first round on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

    East Lyme led 5-2 at halftime before coming alive in the final 24 minutes, outscoring No. 17 Bethel 12-2.

    Rob Swenson scored five goals for the Vikings while James McCoy added three goals and three assists, Matt Valakos scored three goals, Ben Jakubczak scored twice, Alex Jakubczak, Hunter Lizza, Aiden Paterson and Blane Hart each scored a goal, and Scottie Galbo and Eric Brodeur had one assist apiece.

    Brodeur made 12 saves in goal for East Lyme, which held a 31-18 edge in shots.

    Girls' lacrosse

    • No. 17 Morgan built a 12-0 halftime lead and defeated No. 16 St. Bernard 13-1 in the Class S qualifying round. The Saints finish 7-7. 

    Girls' tennis

    • Jennifer LeBlanc and Kasey Kirchhoff rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles as 15th-seeded Waterford upset No. 2 Naugatuck 5-2 in the second round of the Class M tournament. The Lancers (13-5) will play at No. 7 Lauralton Hall of Milford in Wednesday's quarterfinals. Lauralton Hall knocked off No. 10 Fitch 6-1.

    Waterford also picked up straight-set wins from Hayley Wheeler, Allie Silva and Micky Green in singles, as well as a 7-5, 6-3 win from the No. 3 doubles team of Nidhi and Nitya Somineni.

    • Third-seeded Stonington advanced to the Class S quarterfinals with a 6-1 win over No. 14 Abbott Tech in the first round. Maddie Hamm, Alison Marseglia and Holly Foster won singles matches for the Bears (16-1), who swept the doubles behind the teams of Cassie Onorato-Amelia Caron, Chloe Morehouse-Katie Johnstone and Grace Milne-Mia Lewandowski. Stonington will host No. 6 Weston in Tuesday's quarters at 3 p.m.

    Boys' tennis

    • Old Lyme and Stonington have enjoyed two productive days at the Class S tournament in West Hartford. The Wildcats' George Danes and the doubles teams of Nicholas Fava-Tim O'Brien and Connor Wyman-Theodor Wayland have reached the quarterfinals as have the Bears' Jake Stiger and their doubles team of Graham Johnstone-Kyle Remmert.

    Danes, the Shoreline Conference singles champion and No. 3 seed, has lost only one game in three matches, defeating Pierce Cordeau of Wamogo (6-0, 6-0), Tyler Hussey of Rocky Hill (6-0, 6-0) and Robert Costello of East Catholic (6-1, 6-0). He will play unseeded Ryan Garden of Litchfield in the quarterfinals, which will be played on Tuesday on Conard High School.

    Stiger, the Eastern Connecticut Conference runner-up, defeated Old Saybrook's Luke Brodeur (6-1, 6-0), Haddam-Killingworth's Gorka Barrueta Azaola (6-0, 6-0) and Wamogo's Nolan Turtoro (6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-4). He will play no. 5 Nate Comment of Westbrook in the semis.

    Stonington's Johnstone and Remmert, seeded fourth, defeated Immaculate's Aiden Finnegan-Andrew Talarico (6-1, 6-0) and Housatonic's Ian Danforth Gold-Harrison Tillou (6-3, 6-4). They will play Old Lyme's Fava and O'Brien in the quarters. Fava-O'Brien are seeded fifth and advanced with wins over Windsor Locks' Dustin Zapala-Sean Inthavong (6-1, 6-3) and No. 12 John Murray-James Nye of Morgan (4-6, 6-4, 10-6).

    The Wildcats' other doubles team of No. 14 Wyman-Wayland defeated Stonington's Jack Ramsdell-Quinn Hamilton (6-2, 6-1) and Woodland's Andrew Hopkinson-Tyler MacDowall (6-1, 6-2) before upsetting No. 3 Sam Jacinto-Nate Sousa of Cromwell (6-2, 4-6, 10-4) in the third round. They will face No. 6 Nikhileshwar Anaparthi-Ayush Patel of Rocky Hill in the quarters.

    • In Class L tournament at Wilton, ECC doubles champion Jonathan Tan and Guillem Colom were eliminated in the third round by the top-seeded team of New Canaan's Luke Crowley-Jack Moore (6-0, 6-1). Tan and Guillem, the 16th seed, defeated Wethersfield's Jacob Schlapfer-Andrew Labbe (6-1, 6-1) and Bristol Central's Anthony Fasci-Joseph Guerin (6-1, 6-0) in the first two rounds.
