    Local roundup: Fitch beats NFA in meeting of volleyball unbeatens

    Groton — Fitch won an early-season matchup of unbeatens, cruising to a 25-13, 25-18, 25-22 victory over Norwich Free Academy in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I volleyball match on Wednesday.

    Marlo Sim had 17 digs for the Falcons (5-0, 1-0) while Nora Ryan added 14 digs and 18 kills and Karly Morales had five aces and 23 assists.

    Sarah Ericson led the Wildcats (3-1, 0-1) with 17 assists and nine digs while Maddie Allan finished with 11 digs and Kennedy Jakan had four kills.

    In other matches:

    • Lyman Memorial won the fifth game 15-6 for a 3-2 win over Waterford in an ECC Division II match. Lyman won 25-15 and 25-23 before Waterford tied it up with 25-13 and 26-24 wins. Rachel Miller had 17 kills and 26 digs, Angela Colonis had 22 digs, five aces and seven kills and Briana Muckle had 22 digs for Waterford (4-2, 0-1). 

    • New London won its first match with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 win over Wheeler in ECC Division IV. Caylee Parker had 17 service points, four aces, five kills, three blocks and four digs for the Whalers (1-3, 1-0) while Jayden Burns added 10 kills and five points, Stacey Rivera Lopez had 13 points, four aces, 15 assists and seven digs and Chaylet Cintron had 11 digs and eight points.

    • Haddam-Killingworth beat Old Lyme 25-13, 25-23, 25-19 in a Shoreline Conference match. Taylor Thompson had eight kills, Maddie Cann had 11 digs and Isabel Dean-Frazier had 11 assists for Old Lyme (1-5, 0-5).

    • Plainfield beat Montville 16-14 in the fifth game for a 3-2 win over Montville in the ECC Division III opener for both teams. Plainfield opened with 25-16 and 25-21 wins before montville evened it up with 25-19 and 25-21 wins. Mackenzie Clark had 15 digs and five kills, Maya Hillman had 12 kills, six blocks and three aces, Bella Butzgy had 11 digs and four aces and Anna Kreitlow had 27 digs for Montville (3-3).

    • Ledyard rallied for a 23-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-18 win over Killingly in an ECC Division II match. Marisa Howard had 10 kills for the Colonels (5-2, 1-0) while Kaitlyn Flynn served some key points in the final game and finished with nine digs, and Hannah Avila had 23 assists.

    Girls' soccer

    • Alivia Catanzaro scored two goals and Angie Venditti had a pair of assists for East Lyme in a 4-0 victory over Fitch in ECC Division I play. East Lyme led 2-0 at halftime on a penalty kick by Meredith Healy and a goal by Emma Belleville assisted by Venditti. Catanzaro added both her goals in the second half, one from Venditti and one from Caitlin O'Dea. Avery Owen made six saves for East Lyme (4-1-1, 3-0). Fitch is 2-5, 0-3.

    • Peyton Saracina's goal with three seconds remaining lifted Woodstock Academy to a 3-2 win over Norwich Free Academy in ECC Division I play. The Wildcats (1-4, 1-2) had tied the game with just 1:01 to play on a goal by Kayla Park. Natalie Hogan scored NFA's first goal.

    • Lindsay Clement and Halie Jennings had a goal and an assist each as St. Bernard beat New London 3-1 in an ECC Division III game. Caroline Codner scored a goal, Erin Londregan had an assist and Lindsey Reilly and Olivia Massad combined to make six saves for the Saints (3-2, 1-1). Emilia Skrabacz scored a goal and Destiny Rosa made 19 saves for New London (2-3, 0-3). 

    • Sydney Winakor scored a pair of goals as Montville rolled to a 5-0 victory over Griswold in ECC Division III. Alexis DeLucia and Alexis Meehan added one goal and one apiece for the Indians (2-4, 2-0) while McKinley Bon added a goal, Bella Flores and Jillian Murallo had assists, and goalie Julia Beaupre made 14 saves.

    • Vanessa Benjamin scored in the 34th minute as Stonington beat Waterford 1-0 in an ECC Division II match. Tori LoPresto had the shutout as Stonington (4-3, 1-1) outshot Waterford (1-2-2, 0-1-2) 23-4.

    • Bailey Touchette scored all three goals in Putnam's 3-1 victory over Wheeler in ECC Division IV. Marissa Perkins scored for the Lions (0-6, 0-3) and goalie Addie Hauptmann made 27 saves.

    H.S. cross country

    • Mary Madaus of Williams School won the four-team girls' race at the Forman School with a time of 21:19. Also finishing in the top 10 from Williams were Anna Terry, who was eighth at 26:47, and Vaishnavi Ladd, who came in ninth at 26:56. Philip Knowlton of Williams School came in second in the boys' race with a time of 18:08 and teammate Jackson Meisner was 11th (21:24).

    Women's soccer

    • Freshman Audrey Lavey scored once in each half as Wesleyan beat Coast Guard 2-0 in a nonleague game. Freshman Sarah Schollenberger made two saves for Coast Guard (2-6), which outshot Wesleyan 13-11.

    • Minerva Veeser-Bobea scored all three goals as Mount Holyoke beat Mitchell College 3-0 in a nonleague game. Yordi Glover made 11 saves for Mitchell (2-5).
