    H.S. roundup: Ledyard wrestlers win Carl Snitkin Duals

    Norwich — Ledyard defeated host Norwich Free Academy 46-29 in the championship match of the Carl Snitkin Duals wrestling tournament on Saturday.

    The Colonels (15-4) went 4-0 on the day, including a 39-36 victory over Staples, ranked No. 10 in this week's state poll. They also defeated Notre Dame of West Haven 69-9 and Ellis Tech 59-12.

    NFA (11-8) went 3-1, including a 45-35 win over No. 9 Killingly. The Wildcats also defeated Law 60-21 and Shepherd Hill (Mass.) 66-14.

    Connor Doran (113 pounds), Caleb Phillips (120), Walker Lenz (138), Caden Foote (145), Mason Barnett (152) and Jonathan Isgro (160) had pins for Ledyard against NFA, while the Wildcats picked up pins from Dominic Renfree (132), Mason McMahon (182) and Ruben Britos (285).

    Connor DeVega (126), Renfree, McMahon and Britos each went 4-0 for NFA.

    In other matches:

    • Roark Ryan (220) won an individual championship as East Lyme/Norwich Tech finished fifth in the Shoreline Scuffle tournament at Branford. The Vikings finished with 113.5 points, just a half-point behind fourth-place Pomperaug (114) and a point behind third-place Brookfield (114.5). Branford won the tournament with 211 points.

    Ryan pinned all three of his opponents, including Masuk's Austin Pompa in 3:48 of their final. Jeremiah Irizary (113) and Michael Minevich (138) added runner-up finishes for the Vikings while Joseph Morse (106) finished third and David Stankowski (132) and Evan Highley (285) each placed fourth.

    • Freshman Melakai Maddox was Fitch's lone place-winner at the Ridgefield Challenge, reaching the semifinals before finishing fourth at 145. Maddox had four wins, including a pair of pins and a technical fall.

    • Waterford hosted Wrestle for the Cure and went 2-1 on Friday night, defeating over Westerly (60-18) and Putnam (66-6) while losing to Coventry (R.I.) 46-30. AJ Sachatello went 3-0 at 152 points, Jackson Harshberger (182) was 2-0 with a forfeit and Donald Mellon (145) also won two matches for Waterford (11-10).

    Boys' indoor track

    • Stonington's Rhys Hammond, competing in the prestigious New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, placed sixth in the junior boys' mile. Hammond finished in 4:19.25.

    Boys' basketball

    • Dorell Cagle scored eight of his game-high 26 points in the first quarter when Ledyard vaulted out to a 23-10 lead on the way to a 78-60 non-conference win over Old Saybrook. Omar Whitmore added 18 points for the Colonels (6-6), who went on to lead 42-24 at the half, and Xander Hutchins finished with 10.

    • No. 6 NFA led 34-15 at halftime and remained unbeaten with a 62-31 win over East Lyme in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I game. Mason Jackson had 15 points and Jared Martin scored 12 for NFA (11-0, 4-0). Marshall Gada led East Lyme (4-8, 1-3) with 12 points.

    • Av'marion Bordeaux scored 24 points as Amistad outlasted Waterford 66-63 in overtime. Liam Kane made four 3-pointers and finished with 22 points to lead the Lancers (4-8) while Trevor D'Amico added 13 points and six rebounds and Ryan O'Connell had 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

    Girls' basketball

    • Monet Augmon scored 15 points and had five assists as Ledyard beat Old Saybrook 51-26 in a nonleague game. Tallie Williams had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Aliyah Dantzler scored 10 for Ledyard (3-10). 

    • Peggy Minga scored 10 points as Rocky Hill edged Waterford 46-42 in a non-conference game. Lily Kramer had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Lancers (7-6) while Mia Chiappone added 10 points and Gaby Kramer finished with seven.

    • Stonington snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 63-47 win over Haddam-Killingworth in a nonleague game. Sophia Bell scored 29 points and had 14 rebounds and Zoe Ribeiro had 18 points and seven rebounds for Stonington (5-8). 

    • Trinity Angel scored 19 points and Emma Carpenter added 17, including three 3-pointers, as Killingly defeated St. Bernard 57-24. The Saints are 6-6.

    Hockey

    • Goalie Rylin Fowler stopped all 27 shots he faced as the Eastern Connecticut Eagles, playing for the first time in two weeks, defeated Tri-Town 3-0 on Friday night in the Nutmeg Hockey Conference. Evan Tower had a goal and an assist for the Eagles (5-3 overall) while Devyn Jordan and Billy deCastro each scored a goal and Cade Waters had an assist.
