(Editor's note: The Day will be publishing a profile of a spring athlete for each day of the canceled high school athletic season.)

    School: Fitch High School

    Class: Senior

    Sport: Boys' lacrosse

    Position: Midfield

College choice: Northeastern University (will be part of the honors program and plans on playing for the club lacrosse team)

    Chosen major: Business-finance, computer science

Athlete you grew up admiring: Tom Brady, his skill as a quarterback is arguably the greatest there has ever been, but what I admire Brady for is the mental toughness he presents on and off of the field. He is very well-spoken as well. He is certainly a role model any young man can appreciate — Patriots fan or not.

Checking in with Will: "I want to wish all of my teammates the best of luck with all of their future endeavors. Remember that the man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he cannot are both right."

What you need to know about Will: Miner is the salutatorian for Fitch's Class of 2020, a member of the National Honor Society and of the Falcon Academy, a student-to-student tutoring service at the school. He has received a presidential scholarship from Northeastern. "I have always been a 'big numbers guy' in class," Miner said. "I am really enthusiastic about my mathematics and science courses during high school." He was a 2019 All-Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I lacrosse scholar-athlete award winner and the favorite moment of his career was starting an ECC semifinal as a freshman. "My 5-foot-5, 120-pound self was definitely nervous and I certainly got pushed around that day," Miner said. "I appreciate the memories like these for how they have made me the athlete and man I am today." Miner was also an All-ECC Division II first team pick as a defender this past fall as he helped the Fitch boys' soccer team win the D-II regular-season title and reach the ECC Division I tournament final, where it lost on penalty kicks to eventual CIAC Class M champion Stonington. "The soccer season in the fall was nothing short of amazing," Miner said. "We performed at the top of the Eastern Connecticut Conference when no other programs expected us to. We grew as soccer players, but more so as young men battling adversity. ... The season will be something to hold on to for the rest of my life." Miner thanked his coaches, Jay Wolfradt (soccer) and David Sabilia (lacrosse), as well as his family. "The encouragement I receive from my entire family is what inspires me in all aspects of my life," he said. "I am extremely appreciative of that. My late grandfather, William Whaley Miner, is someone that inspires me academically."
