    H.S. baseball roundup: Saints sweep behind Baillargeon

    Willimantic — Walker Baillargeon had eight hits as St. Bernard swept an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II baseball doubleheader from Windham on Saturday, winning the opener 19-3 and the second game 17-1.

    Kyle Eagan pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to win the opener and Aiden Whitten pitched a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts to win the second game.

    Joe Basso had six hits and nine RBI on the day for St. Bernard (7-5, 7-5) and teammate Ethan Chavez had four hits in Game 1.

    In other games:

    • Norwich Free Academy and Fitch split an ECC Division I doubleheader, with NFA winning the opener 3-2 in 9 innings and Fitch winning Game 2 8-4. Ryan Deshefy had five hits, including two doubles, and scored four runs in the two games for NFA (8-5, 7-5) and Anthony Franco and Cam McGugan had four hits each for Fitch (7-2, 7-2) and Franco drove in three runs.

    NFA starter Griffin Pontbriant pitched the first six innings in the opener, striking out 12 with two walks. Fitch starter Dylan Meyer struck out eight with two walks over 6.2 innings. Ryan O'Connor of Fitch tripled in the second game.

    • Braydon Wuestner was 5-for-5 with four RBI as Ledyard beat Bacon Academy 10-3 in Game 2 of an ECC Division I doubleheader to earn a split after Bacon won the opener 6-4. Winning pitcher Zion Fraser struck out six in six innings and was 2-for-2 with three runs scored for Ledyard (3-8, 3-8).

    Bacon, which had its six-game winning streak snapped, got a six-hitter from Colton Vasseur in the opener. Vasseur struck out eight with one walk and got a groundout to end the game with runners on second and third. Harry Snow had four hits and scored four runs, Vasseur had four hits and two RBI and Steven Laliberte had three hits and three RBI on the day for Bacon (6-3, 6-3), which qualified for the Class M tournament.

    • Daylan Griffin and Josh Person had complete-game victories as Lyman Memorial swept Putnam in an ECC Division II doubleheader, winning the opener 11-3 and the second game 13-3. Griffin pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and Person pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts. Jeremiah Bobbi (five runs) and Griffin (four RBI) each had six hits on the day for Lyman (6-6, 6-6). 

    • Wheeler was swept by Plainfield in an ECC Division II doubleheader, losing 18-1 in the opener and 10-0 in the second game. Both games went five innings. Matt Pierce and Sean Bergel had three hits each on the day and Kyle Kessler doubled for Wheeler (2-9, 2-9).
