    Waterford's Menders wins three events at Class MM track meet

    New Britain — Waterford's Sam Menders dominated the jumping events during Wednesday's CIAC Class MM boys' outdoor track and field championships at Willow Brook Park.

    Menders, a senior, captured the high jump (6 feet, 3 inches), long jump (21-9.75) and triple jump (44 feet) as the Lancers earned a top 10 finish in the team standings (eighth, 34 points). Teammate Sean Corman added a fifth in the 3,200 (9:47.30).

    Menders wasn't the only local individual winner as New London senior Daniel Duperval captured a state title in the shot put (45-11) and added a second in the discus (131-2) as the Whalers finished seventh with 38 points.

    East Lyme was the top local team finisher, placing fifth with 45 points as junior Luke Anthony had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1,600-meter race (4:22.43) and 3,200 (9:42.51). The Vikings' 4x400 relay team of Fred Rukundo, Magnum Brandt, Kai Ritz and Noam Sokolovsky also finished second in 3:33.93.

    New London's Marquis Whyte added a second in the 800 (1:58.23) and sixth in the 110 high hurdles (16.86) while the Whalers' Jahryn Harkness was third in the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.28) and George Senat was sixth in the javelin (136-0).

    Fitch, which finished 12th with 22 points, was led by Cornell Jones, who placed second in the high jump (6 feet) while Noah Brown was third in the shot put (44-2.75), Thomas Forde was fourth in the 800 (2:00.35) and the Falcons' 4x100 relay team was Fernando Coreas, Gavin Asciolla, Nimyel Gamboa and Khyol Kershaw was sixth (45.36).

    East Lyme's other place-winners were Blake Harris, who finished fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.64) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (43.62), Ben Gandenberger (fourth in the javelin, 143-8), Will Anglin (fifth in the javelin, 143-6) and Sokolovsky (sixth in the 400, 51.84).

    Weston won the team title with 84 points.

    In the girls' meet, Hillhouse won the championship with 80.5 points and East Lyme was fifth with 53.

    Savannah Soleau and Sjodin Fedikovich were multiple winners for the Vikings. Soleau was third in the shot put (36-0.75) and fifth in the discus (100-11), while Fedikovich was third in the javelin (106-3) and sixth in the pole vault (8-0). Also for the Vikings, Danielle Zelesky was fifth in the 300 hurdles (50.42), Katherine Murphy was fifth in the high jump (4-10), Izzy Paggioli was sixth in the 3,200 (12:29.31) and Jayla Washington was sixth in the long jump (16-2.5).

    East Lyme also placed fourth in the 4x100 relay with Lauren Hinckley, Ava Pitruzzello, Sydney Arustei and Margaret Dunne finishing in 51.91, and the 4x400 team of Dunne, Hannah Bergeron, Brianna am Ende and Ava Pitruzzello was fifth in 4:18.37.

    Waterford's Lillie Abramowicz added a fifth in the triple jump (33-0.75).
