    H.S. football / Week 3 preview capsules

    Today's Games

Fitch at New London, 6 p.m. (streamed live on theday.com)

    Records: Fitch (1-0, 0-0 ECC Div. I); New London (1-0, 0-0)

Last week: Fitch was idle; New London defeated Guilford, 13-6

Outlook: This renewal of a former Thanksgiving Day game offers two teams still with much to discover, perhaps more about their offenses, which mustered 13 points apiece in their respective openers. Fitch edged Stonington before last week's bye and New London opened its season last week needing a goal line stand to hold off Guilford. The defenses, however, were stellar, highlighted by New London's Josiah Williams, who made two open field tackles inside the five in the final minute.

East Lyme at NFA, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: East Lyme (1-1, 0-0 ECC Div. I); NFA (1-1, 0-0)

Last week: East Lyme lost to Killingly 42-14; NFA defeated Woodstock 21-20

Outlook: Both teams left the field last week perhaps a bit disappointed. East Lyme lost soundly to Killingly, while Woodstock Academy put quite the scare into NFA. NFA trailed 14-13 before taking its first lead the game with 5:19 left when Jayden Desilus hit running back Jake Kenney for a five-yard TD and Max Pierre Louis caught the two-point conversion. The NFA defense later stopped a two-point conversion after Woodstock scored late and blocked a 42-yard field goal with nine seconds left.

Bacon Academy at Stonington, 6:45 p.m.

    Records: Bacon (0-2); Stonington (1-1)

Last week: Bacon lost to Ledyard 47-0; Stonington defeated Griswold/Wheeler 60-0.

Outlook: The Bears got their first win in more than 1,000 days as a program — and looked quite impressive doing it. This is a chance for Stonington to win consecutive games, given Bacon's offensive struggles. The Bobcats, with a young line, have yet to score this season, outscored 67-0 by Plainfield and Ledyard.

Montville at East Catholic, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Montville (0-1); East Catholic (0-2)

Last week: Montville was idle; East lost to Tolland 18-7

Outlook: The Indians had a week off to contemplate a season-opening loss to East Lyme. They play a Tier 4 (the lowest) team from the Central Connecticut Conference, closer to Montville in enrollment, as part of Connecticut High School Football Alliance scheduling. The Eagles have scored a combined 14 points in their two games.

    Saturday's Games

Thames River at Prince Tech, 10:30 a.m.

Records: Thames River (2-0, 2-0 Conn. Tech. Conference); Prince Tech (2-0, 2-0)

Last week: Thames River defeated Bullard Havens/Kolbe Cathedral 32-6; Prince Tech defeated Kaynor Tech/Wilcox Tech 40-14

Outlook: There are four undefeated teams remaining in the Connecticut Technical Conference ... and here are two of them. Thames River has outscored its opponents 68-12 in two games, led by senior quarterback Jake Brenek, who has thrown for 347 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games.

    Waterford at Ledyard, 11 a.m.

Records: Waterford (1-1, 1-0 ECC Div. II); Ledyard (2-0, 1-0)

Last week: Waterford defeated Windham 27-24; Ledyard defeated Bacon 47-0

Outlook: Not many other teams in the ECC have been as impressive thus far than Ledyard, which has outscored its opponents 97-8. Coach Mike Serricchio reminded his players even before they left the field last week that "Waterford is a different animal," alluding to the Lancers 'ability to throw the ball. Waterford gave coach Zeth Nolda earned his first win last week, helped along by quarterback Nate Hynes' 35-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Elci. The two hooked up for a 76-yard score in week one.
