    CIAC roundup: No. 7 New London boys advance in Class L soccer tourney

    New London — Flavio Alvarado scored three goals as seventh-seeded New London rolled to a 5-1 victory over No. 26 Wilcox Tech in the first round of the CIAC Class L boys' soccer tournament on Tuesday.

    The Whalers (13-5) will host No. 23 E.O. Smith, which beat No. 10 Bethel in a penalty kick shootout, in Thursday's second round.

    Niko Churis added a goal and an assist for New London, while Andy Suarez had two assists, Dooby Robert scored a goal and Moises Melgar Sanchez an Luke Wester each had an assist. 

    In other matches:

    • No. 14 Fitch erupted for five goals in the first half and defeated No. 19 Prince Tech/University 7-0 in the Class L first round. Sebastian Duffy scored three goals in the first 11 minutes of the match for the Falcons (11-6), who play at No. 3 Middletown in Thursday's second round. Kyle Potenciano added two goals for Fitch while Donte Valentine had one goal and one assist, Diego Martinez scored a goal and Boden Frost, Ryan Greene, Peter Petropoulos and Thomas Forde each had assists.

    • Sam Montalto had a goal and an assist as No. 3 Stonington scored two late goals to defeat No. 30 Tolland 2-0 in the Class M first round. Montalto headed in a long throw-in from Cole Devoe in the 72nd minute, then set up Drew Johnson for the insurance goal three minutes later for the Bears (17-1), who will host No. 19 Plainville in Thursday's second round.

    • Daimon Pollard had four goals and an assist as No. 8 Ledyard routed No. 25 Haddam-Killingworth 9-1 in the Class M first round. Nick Washington added two goals and two assists for the Colonels (15-4), who will host No. 9 Granby in Thursday's second round at 4 p.m. Owen O'Brien added a goal and assist for Ledyard while Cam Weber scored a goal and Peyton Luther and Mason Day had assists.

    • Sam Blumberger scored the first goal and set up the second as No. 11 Bacon Academy defeated No. 22 Foran 2-0 in the Class M first round. The Bobcats (12-6) visit No. 6 Weston in Thursday's second round. Blumberger converted a cross from Keegan Appleby to give Bacon a 1-0 lead, then hooked up with Aidan McLoughlin for an insurance goal with 1:05 left in the first half. Goalie Ryan Claffey made seven saves for the Bobcats.

    • Luke Karpiej scored a goal in the first half as No. 26 Hale-Ray defeated No. 7 St. Bernard in the Class S first round. Goalie Nate Belchik made 15 saves for the Saints, who finish 12-5-1. 

    • Goals by Anthony Reyes and Angelo Salazar lifted No. 20 Immaculate to a 2-0 win over No. 13 Montville in the Class S first round. Goalie Adonis Santiago made nine saves for the Indians, who finish 12-6-1.

    • Stanley Strycharz had a goal and an assist for No. 11 Coventry in its 4-1 win over No. 22 Wheeler in the Class S first round. Jon Anderson scored, Matt Pierce had the assist and Deondre Bransford had nine saves for the Lions, who finish 8-9.

    Field hockey

    • Sarah Healy scored one goal and assisted on another as No. 10 East Lyme beat No. 7 Fitch 2-0 in the Class M first round. The Vikings (9-8-1) avenged a 3-0 loss to the Falcons in last week's ECC tournament semifinals and advanced to Thursday's quarterfinals at No. 2 Wethersfield, a 2-0 first-round winner over No. 15 Brookfield. Healy assisted on the game's first goal by Julia Locklear and scored the second goal unassisted. Fitch finishes 12-5-2.

    • Sandy McGugan scored a pair of unassisted goals, both in the second quarter, as No. 2 Stonington defeated No. 15 Stafford in the Class S first round. The Bears (16-3), who host No. 10 Lauralton Hall in Thursday's quarterfinals at 4 p.m., held a 12-5 edge in shots and 9-3 edge in penalty corners. Goalie Avery Slocum made two saves to earn the shutout. 

    Girls' soccer

    • No. 11 Watertown downed No. 22 Montville 9-2 in the Class M first round on Monday night. Kate Bowman and Allie Kondash scored for Montville (8-10) and Kelsey Chiasson had an assist. Also, Emily Treat had seven saves and Katie Myjak added four saves.

    Volleyball

    • No. 26 Windsor beat No. 7 New London 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19 in the Class L first round on Monday night. Nalyce Dudley had 10 kills, four digs and two blocks, Stacey Rivera had eight assists and five digs and Yarielis Ortiz had 14 digs for New London, which finishes 16-6. Also, Unique Ketter had five kills, Wennonah Amar had eight assists and Chrismaela Bouquet had two aces.
