    H.S. football Week 7 capsules

    Today

    (All games 6:30 p.m.)

    Bacon Academy at Plainfield

    Records: Bacon 3-2 (1-1 ECC Medium); Plainfield 2-3 (0-3).

Last week: Bacon beat Woodstock Academy, 48-16; Plainfield beat Putnam, 28-14.

Outlook: Bacon hadn't run for more than 100 yards in any of its first four games. It ran for 205 yards in last weekend's win over Woodstock. Quarterback Brennden Cullen had nine carries for 70 yards and a touchdown while receiver Brian Hogan took direct snaps out of the single wing and ran for 65 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Hogan added four catches for 118 yards and two scores while Cullen was 11 of 12 for 188 yards. ... Linebacker Corey Gallagher leads the Bobcats with 68 tackles and three sacks. … Plainfield's Jeff Buchert ran 16 times for 113 yards and three touchdowns and threw a 36-yard touchdown in his team's win over Putnam.

    East Lyme at Fitch

Records: East Lyme 5-1 (2-1 ECC Large); Fitch 4-1 (1-1).

Last week: East Lyme beat Ledyard, 21-19; Fitch was idle.

Outlook: The region's most significant game of the week as it pertains to states. Fitch is ranked sixth in the uber-competitive Class L; East Lyme is fourth in Class MM. East Lyme might be able to withstand another loss. The Falcons would most likely be cooked with a loss. … The Vikings have been a run-first team, led by Kevin Miao (six touchdowns) and Jordan McCoy (10 TDs). McCoy has averaged 96 yards a game and Miao 72 yards. ... Linebackers William Calkins (65 tackles) and Eric McGlone (57 tackles) lead a defense that has allowed just 50 points. … Fitch hasn't played in two weeks, when it lost to New London, 21-0. The Falcons had just six first downs in that game and won't find East Lyme's defense much easier to deal with. Fitch loves to run and features one of the league's best tailbacks in Bobby Johnson. Fullback Alan Anderson runs tough inside, and quarterback Derek Baldoz is a skilled runner.

    Killingly at Stonington

    Records: Killingly 3-3 (1-0 ECC Small); Stonington 4-2 (3-0).

Last week: Killingly lost to Norwich Free Academy, 10-2; Stonington beat Hartford Sports Sciences, 47-14.

Outlook: The Small Division title race begins to take shape tonight. The Redmen have played just one division game, but it was significant - a 26-7 win over Griswold. The Bears finish their division schedule against Griswold next week . … Senior running back Anthoney Tetreault is diminutive (5 feet 6, 174 pounds), but he has carried Killingly's offense. He's run 138 times for 618 yards and eight touchdowns. The rest of the team has a combined 66 carries. Quarterback D.J. Grimes has thrown for 413 yards and three touchdowns. … Josh Whitford (621 yards rushing, six TDs) and Jimmy Connelly (413 yards, six TDs) lead the Bears double-wing offense. And when Stonington has opted to throw, Sam Dipollino (318 yards, 7 TDs) has been effective.

    Ledyard at Waterford

    Records: Ledyard 3-2 (2-0 ECC Medium); Waterford 2-4 (1-2).

Last week: Ledyard lost to East Lyme, 21-19; Waterford lost to Windham, 21-18.

Outlook: The Colonels are better than their record shows - they've lost by a combined eight points to East Lyme and New London. Those two losses are all that matters when it comes to qualifying for states, and Ledyard cannot lose again. It's ninth in the latest Class SS rankings, and it's highly unlikely that a team will qualify with three losses in that division. … Running back Zeke Torres played through a right shoulder sprain last week and accounted for all of the Colonels touchdowns. He ran for a 20-yard score and caught touchdowns of 29 and 9 yards. Brett Galisewski had six catches for 83 yards and nearly caught a touchdown as time expired. … Waterford had its chances to win in the closing minutes last week, too. It moved from its 13 to the Windham 6 with two minutes left before the drive stalled. Y-Kim Sheppard scored on runs of 17 and 10 yards for the Lancers. Also, quarterback Zac Der was 12-for-21 for 117 yards and a touchdown.

    Montville at Windham

    Records: Montville 5-1 (2-0 ECC Medium); Windham 3-2 (1-1).

Last week: Montville lost to New London, 28-26; Windham beat Waterford, 21-18.

Outlook: Windham is catching the Indians at a bad time. Montville should be in a foul mood after giving up a 17-point lead last week in its loss to New London. … Skyler McNair has run for a team-high 121 yards a game with seven touchdowns while Tyler Girard-Floyd has averaged 98 rushing yards with seven touchdowns. ... Linebacker Ricky Fort averages a team-high 11 tackles a game for the Indians. ...Nathan Fleming had 17 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown for the Whippets last week while Denzelle Mitchell scored on an 82-yard kickoff return.

    St. Bernard/Norwich Tech at Putnam

    Records: St. Bernard/Norwich Tech 0-6 (0-3 ECC Small); Putnam 0-6 (0-3).

Last week: St. Bernard lost to Griswold, 35-6; Putnam lost to Plainfield, 28-14.

Outlook: One of these two teams will be breathing a sigh of relief afterward since, realistically, this is the best chance either has at winning a league game. ... St. Bernard hurt itself with turnovers and penalties in last week's loss. Phil Jenkins' 15-yard run accounted for the Saints' lone touchdown. ... The Clippers' Shane Herlihy had six catches for 96 yards and a touchdown in defeat.

    Tourtellotte/Ellis Tech at Griswold

    Records: Tourtellotte/Ellis Tech 2-4 (2-1 ECC Small); Griswold 3-2 (2-1).

Last week: Tourtellotte lost to Bullard Havens, 32-6; Griswold beat St. Bernard, 35-6.

Outlook: Tourtellotte has averaged 12 points. ... Griswold needs to win in order to keep itself alive in the division race. ... Ken Slonski ran 10 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns in last week's win while Tony Velasquez added 65 yards rushing and a touchdown and two catches for 47 yards and a score.

    Enfield at Valley Regional/Old Lyme

    Records: Enfield 2-4; Valley Regional/Old Lyme 3-3.

Last week: Enfield lost to Hyde, 39-12; Valley Regional/Old Lyme was idle.

Outlook: Enfield has lost two close games - to North Branford (14-13) and Coventry/Windham Tech (44-38). Its other two losses were to East Lyme (34-7) and Hyde. ... Andrew Buanno ran for 113 yards on 16 carries last week for Enfield and caught a 63-yard touchdown. ... Valley had last week off due to a forfeit win over Nonnewaug of Woodbury, which forfeited the season.

    Saturday

    Woodstock at NFA

    Time: 1 p.m.

    Records: Woodstock 1-5 (0-2 ECC Large); NFA 2-4 (0-2).

Last week: Woodstock was beaten by Bacon, 48-16; NFA beat Killingly, 10-2.

Outlook: Michael Green ran for 124 yards last week for Woodstock. ... NFA got a big boost from its defense last weekend. Killingly had a first-and-goal from the Wildcats 1-yard line on its second drive of the game, but NFA stuffed it for a turnover on downs. ... Anthony Facchini has been one of the Wildcats' best offensive threats. He ran 22 times for 127 yards and a touchdown against Killingly.
