    High school football previews/Week 4

All games 6:30 p.m. unless noted

    Today's Games

    Ledyard at New London

Records: Ledyard (2-0); New London (2-0)

Fast facts: Ledyard coach Jim Buonocore made the drive to Greenwich last week to scout his alma mater and came away very impressed with New London. The Whalers even earned a first-place vote in the state coaches' poll this week, following their 51-33 win at Greenwich. ... Ledyard isn't exactly helpless, however. The Colonels are unbeaten, too, with a strong offensive line and one of the league's best backs in senior Alex Manwaring. But is that combination good enough to keep New London's offense off the field? ... New London quarterback Rob Key threw for 303 yards and Kyle McKinnon ran for 258 last week, opening the eyes of several observers downstate.

    NFA at East Lyme

Records: NFA (2-0, 0-0 ECC Large Division); East Lyme (2-0, 0-0 ECC Large Division)

Fast facts: NFA struggled early with Plainfield last week before a major awakening. The Wildcats pose the most questions and dangers this far for East Lyme, off to an encouraging start. NFA is clearly the most talented and fastest team East Lyme has seen. But the game is at East Lyme on natural grass, or perhaps by this time of the fall, the natural mud of Dick North Field. ... The Vikings have allowed nine points in two games, two by taking an intentional safety. Most encouraging thus far: They've found other sources of production to support senior Chad Berry.

    Montville at Windham

Records: Montville (3-0, 2-0 ECC Medium Division); Windham (0-3, 0-2 ECC Medium Division)

Fast facts: Montville has not yielded a touchdown in its last nine quarters, not since the third period of its opener vs. Watertown. Isaiah Holloway and Kenny Strecker have anchored a defense that has the Indians winning with old time strength and power. ... Windham has the most speed of any team Montville has seen. ... A win here keeps Montville unbeaten halfway through the race for the ECC Medium Division title.

    Killingly at Stonington

Records: Killingly (2-1, 1-0 ECC Small Division); Stonington (2-1, 1-0 ECC Small Division)

Fast facts: Who knew this would be a game for first-place in the ECC Small Division? The Redmen have won two straight. Stonington, meanwhile, got the attention of some observers of the summer passing league as a possible sleeper in the ECC this season. Now that the Bears have won at Fitch ? with big plays from skill positions ? there's no more sneaking up on anyone. Stonington is a clear contender for the Small Division title and a Class S playoff spot.

    Waterford at Fitch

    Records: Waterford (2-1); Fitch (1-2)

Fast facts: The Lancers rebounded nicely last week from a Week 2 loss to Montville by grinding one out at Windham. Coach Mike Ellis has probably had happier thoughts, though, of playing an irritated Fitch team, still smarting from a home loss to Stonington. ... Fitch has scored a combined 19 points in its last two games. ... Y-Kim Sheppard scored three touchdowns and had 130 yards rushing last week for the Lancers, who play their fourth straight road game while high school renovations continue.

    Plainfield at St. Bernard

Records: Plainfield (0-3, 0-1 ECC Small Division); St. Bernard (1-2, 0-1 ECC Small Division)

Fast facts: The Saints have stumbled the last two weeks, following their season-opening win at Lowell (Mass.) Catholic. Sean Hurley caught three passes in the 41-7 loss to East Lyme last week. St. Bernard allowed barely 100 total yards to Lowell Catholic, but has surrendered at least 40 points the last two games.

    Saturday's Game

Griswold at Woodstock Academy, 1 p.m.

    Records: Griswold (1-1); Woodstock (0-2)

Fast facts: This is a "crossover" game to the Large Division for the Wolverines, who are well acquainted with large schools thus far. They were off last week after a tough loss to Class LL Fairfield Prep in Week 2. ... It's been a tough few weeks for Woodstock, which has allowed four times as many points (80) as it has scored this year (20).
