Von Achen resigns as girls' basketball coach at Waterford

Waterford – After 20 seasons at Waterford High School, 17 as the head girls’ basketball coach, Rob Von Achen has resigned following several health concerns in the past few years.

Von Achen led the Lancers to two state championship berths, finishing as the Class L runners-up in 2005 and 2007. Waterford was 4-16 last season after finishing 21-5 with a an Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division title and a Class L quarterfinal berth in 2012.

“I’m going to miss it a ton,” Von Achen said at a press conference Thursday at the Waterford Field House. “I can’t thank the girls enough. They were always good girls, good young people. That’s probably the most rewarding thing about coaching, not necessarily the success they gave me.”

Athletic director Dave Sousa said Von Achen’s position has been posted internally and interviews will begin next week.
