Gizio, MarcAurele, Shaw to be honored by Wrestling Hall of Fame

Three local athletes will be among those inducted into the newly formed Connecticut Wrestling Hall of Fame on April 16.

Former Norwich Free Academy wrestler Tony Gizio, NFA and Ledyard star T.J. MarcAurele and Waterford’s Stefenie Shaw will be honored along with the late Steve Fernandes of Southington, Hand’s Jim Guzzio and four-time State Open champion Brendan Harris of Somers.

The wrestlers will be recognized at Aria’s in Prospect. The ceremony will be part of an evening that also includes the induction of four Connecticut residents into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame by the Connecticut chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Gizio won New England titles in 1993 and 1994, State Open titles in 1992 and 1994 and Class LL state championships from 1992-94. Gizio was a National High School Coaches’ Association All-American in 1994.

MarcAurele won three New England titles, four State Open championships (1989-92) and went 171-1 in high school. In 1989, he won the Cadet Division (ages 15-16) world championship in Greco-Roman. In 1993, he was second in the NCJAA national championships wrestling for Kansas’ Garden City Community College, helping Garden City win the national title.

Shaw twice finished fourth at the U.S. Olympic trials and won a bronze medal for the U.S. women at the 2004 Pan-American Games. She won a U.S. national championship in 2008 and captured a collegiate national title for Oklahoma City University in 2009.
