Groton — Fitch High School volleyball coach Steve Banks believed, in time, his team had the talent to be pretty good this season once all the youngsters got acclimated.

The Falcons exceeded Banks’ expectations. Senior Olivia Nordstrom had 25 assists and classmate Caroline Parker added 15 digs as Fitch beat East Lyme on Monday 25-15, 27-25, 9-25, 25-21 to clinch the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I title.

The Falcons (11-5, 7-0) start three seniors, four sophomores and a freshman.

“I never really envisioned this happening,” Banks said. “I told the kids early that we’d be a better team in mid-October than early-September and I think they’re starting to believe it. I think they’re starting to believe in themselves. We have a good mix with a couple of seniors and a couple of young kids.

“If you can play together as a team, the sky is the limit.”
