Day 1: Montville wrestlers tied for fourth in Class S

Montville, in search of its first state wrestling championship since 2003, is tied for fourth after the first day of the CIAC Class S tournament at Windham High School.

The Indians, however, have the most wrestlers still in the field (12) heading into Saturday's final day of competition.

Haddam-Killingworth has 59 points, five better than host Windham's 54. The Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech cooperative program is third with 50 points while Montville and Gilbert each have 49 points.

Windham and Gilbert have the most wrestlers in the quarterfinals (nine each) while Montville has six.

The competition resumes at 9 a.m. with the quarterfinals and tournament officials will try to complete the tournament early due to the forecast of a winter storm that is expected to arrive Saturday night. The championship round semifinals are scheduled to start at noon with the championship finals and consolation finals tentatively set for 4 p.m.

In other meets, Danbury has 63 points and leads Fairfield Warde by six at the Class LL tourney at Trumbull (NFA is tied for eighth with 37 points), Xavier leads New Milford 59-56 in Class L and Foran has 72 points to lead host Guilford (60.5) in Class M with Waterford fourth with 59 points and New London ninth with 41.5.
