H.S. baseball roundup: Waterford's Burrows repeats his no-hit success

Waterford — Mike Burrows pitched his second straight no-hitter as Waterford High School beat Stonington 8-0 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II baseball game Tuesday.

Burrows, the UConn-bound senior, struck out 14. Burrows no-hit Norwich Free Academy on April 30, striking out 16 in a 6-0 win. He also struck out 21 in a no-hitter against Killingly his junior year.

"He throws three or four pitches and he throws them for strikes,'' Waterford coach Art Peluso said. "His fastball is in the 90s now. If you take away his first start this year, he's been lights out.''

Burrows, who averages two strikeouts per inning for his career, walked one batter.

"It's a game of inches,'' Burrows said. "When my stuff is on, it's two or three inches down. And if it's two or three inches up it gets hit better.''

Burrows felt he had better stuff against NFA, but went right after Stonington (4-10, 2-6) and had a 5-0 lead after two innings.

"I went after them with fastballs, curves and sliders,'' Burrows said. "I'd say 85 percent were fastballs. I was working the four-seamer and the two-seamer.''

Jared Burrows, his cousin, doubled twice and scored twice. Nick Porazzi singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice, Matt Driscoll doubled and drove in two runs and Mike Burrows doubled in two runs for Waterford (11-3, 5-3).
