High school football / Week 6 preview capsules
Thursday’s game
New London at Ledyard, 6 p.m.
Records: New London (2-1); Ledyard (4-0)
Last week: Both teams idle
Outlook: A renewal of a classic ECC rivalry. The games get bigger now for the Colonels, who are tied atop ECC Div. II with Woodstock and sit No. 7 in the Class S rankings (the top eight make the playoffs). New London, meanwhile, scored a season-high 26 points two weeks ago at Griswold/Wheeler, thanks to quarterback Christian Irizarry, who threw TD passes to Rhodia Perry and Herbie Bonneau while filling in for injured starter Roddy Pratts.
Friday’s game
Killingly at Stonington, 6:30 p.m.
Records: Killingly (3-0, 1-0); Stonington (3-1, 3-0)
Last week: Both teams idle
Outlook: Fill in the blank time: This is the biggest game in Stonington since … well, it’s hard to say. But it’s been a while. The Bears would complete ECC Div. III at 4-0 and win the division with a victory — and move into contention for the state playoffs. Killingly would move to 2-0 in the division and still have work to do, but would be the presumptive favorite. Killingly has been idle since Sept. 24 when it defeated East Haven. Can the Bears capitalize on some rust?
Saturday’s games
Waterford at NFA, 1 p.m.
Records: Waterford (1-3); NFA (2-2)
Last week: Both teams idle
Outlook: This may be Waterford’s best chance to defeat NFA in several years. The Lancers had a near miss at Woodstock two weeks ago, while NFA has been smarting from a decisive loss to No. 2 Darien. Waterford lost at Woodstock by one; NFA won at Woodstock by one.
VG Techs at Thames River, 3 p.m.
Records: VG Techs (0-4, 0-4 CTC); Thames River (4-0, 4-0)
Last week: VG Techs lost to Quinebaug Valley 38-8; Thames River was idle
Outlook: It’s a three-team race to win the Connecticut Technical Conference and perhaps make the Class L playoffs. Thames River leads the league at 4-0, tied with Cheney Tech and Quinebaug Valley. The games will just get bigger for the Crusaders. VG Techs is a co-op between Vinal Tech of Middletown and Goodwin Tech of New Britain.
